Jungle- lore resort in Pangot village tucked in a valley was so refreshing after two years of staying home on account of Covid. My cousin Vasumathi and I had spent five days last week in this beautiful unspoiled place watching birds even while sitting on the Cheed cottage balcony. The view was fantastic and on our early morning visits to sight the birds we had wonderful view of Nanda Devi peak. The food was excellent and being a diabetic I was more fussy than my cousin but the staff was excellent in attending to our every requirement. Bhuvan, who manages the resort was a very knowledgeable and attentive to our needs There are only four cottages in the property and cheed cottage was the best . Our two guides Puran Joshi and Mahesh Rajput were also very good.
My cousin and I are senior citizens and what was missing in the place was railing to hold on while climbing down or up the steps. It is a place to go when you can and also a place to recommend to your friedns.

Bird Watching is my hobby. Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary, Sheikha Jheel etc I have visited and I have seen birds there even in afternoon. Migratory birds are seen in the month of December and January in Northern Plains of India but this place may be December and January are not the right months of the year...so better luck next time for me. Mountain view is amazing from this place.

Had visited this Bird.sanctuary in March 2018. It's a must visit for any bird lover. Infact Pangot is such a small place, even in the present day that it's does not even have a barber shop in the village. Having said that it has atleast 20 hotels where you can choose to stay. It's a pretty offbeat location. Cellphone connectivity is an issue there, there are no fuel stations. The village has only two grocery shops, if I remember correctly. In short if you are going to Pangot for a birding trip, pack properly. If you forget anything you will not be able to buy a second one at Pangot. The most important thing however, which you should not forget at any cost, is to get your fuel tank filled either at Nainital or at Kaladunghi. And if you are going to Pangot for birding (why else will you go to Pangot? It's famous only for birds) ensure that you book your guide, in advance. Without a proper guide you will be lost in the jungles around Pangot. Lastly while birding is at the heart of Pangot, don't forget you can amazing views of the entire Himalayan range from a point before Cheer Point, from where you can get good landscape shots. And when going for birding carry a super telephoto lens (minimum 400mm) else you will be left wanting for extra reach. Remember birds in this part of the world are small. So they move very fast. Hence click at a high shutterspeed and be very alert. What all this remoteness of the place means that you can still see birds in the pristine forests around Pangot. Also no matter which season you are going, carry warm clothes. Pangot can get really cold. It receives snow in winters. So happy birding.

Pangot is a quaint village tucked in a valley. There are some lovely places to stay like Jungle Lore Birding Lodge where the cottage, great food and welcoming warmth of the staff will ensure a comfortable stay. However a few things to be kept in mind while visiting Pangot in the winter months. Even though the distance from Nainital is not much but crowds of visitors choke the roads to see the view of the snow clad peaks and the snow that collects in some parts of the road. As a result traffic gets completely choked in dangerous icy conditions as there is hardly place for cars to go up or come down. This causes not only delay but stress. The black ice in some parts of the road is so dangerous that we had a narrow escape while driving down when the car spun out if control. The post is thus to warn visitors wishing to make the journey in these months.

Hi Naish,
Hope you are doing great!!!
Good to know that you have planned a trip to Niani tal, during the winters as the weather will be pleasant and chilli at night. Pangot is around 1hrs drive from naini devi mandir and via kala dungi Pahari.
Making it in points for easy to understand and use full tips
1. Seek local’s assistance when you are in Panghot as they have better idea about where the birds be during winters and summers.
2. If you are going for a photography you have to carry high zoom lens as some times a normal Camera zoom not able to catch the best shots.
3. Stay in Naini-tal look for an hotel on Mall road shouldn’t’ cost you much as you are travelling during the low season so fares are likely to be between INR 1000 to MAX 2000/- PD
Transportation
4. You can hire bike on mall road which is between INR 1000 to 1500 with full tank.
5. Would suggest you to get a Royal Enfield for better grip on steep & narrow hills roads and acceleration.
6. Whatever the KMS you ride at the day end get the tank full on your own as the amount they collect is based on the ODO meter, which can be easily fooled so better have petrol filled on your own.
7. You can hire these back around 8 or 9 O’clock in the morning but be sure to be back by 1730hrs as the Mall road remain close from 1800hrs to 2100hrs.
Food & Liquor
8. If you booze then it may disappoint you as the liquor is sometimes not available so where ever you take your first halt before naini tal buy extra bottle as spare just in case if you don’t get your brand otherwise Sikkim, Old monk is easily available also even if you happen to visit to any liquor shop in nainital then the closing time I guess is around 08 O’clock to manage accordingly
9. There are many options for street food, you can go to Bhotia Market there is famous MOMO’s shop best in and across nainital also there are some good restaurants you can hope in.
Advice
10. Don’t drink and drive even during the day time rather sit somewhere and enjoy the scenic view have a happy and safe trip.
