What do you do when you have a 3-4 m tide, a river mouth at a very flat coast with extensive farming and lots of infrastructure, and live next to the storming North Sea? You take precautions. And that is what they have done here....More

Impressive what man can build. Not much to see there but worth a stop. You can walk over the Sperrwerk and see the huge doors keeping out the floods or in the water of the Eider... nice view and some technical explanations...

Impressive to see the barrage. The view towards to sea beautiful and lots of birds around. Nice to walk and watch

The Eider Barrage was built in the early 1960's in conjunction with dykes to prevent flooding. This has proved very successful. Now there are plans to turn the barrage into a hydroelectric generator as well. There are a lot of farms, windmills and businesses which...More

We stopped here to catch a sightseeing boat to Toenning. Hundreds of nesting sandwich terns, some quite aggressive if you get too close. If you're interested in engineering you might find it worth a visit.

The Eider Barrage is of course an important attraction and impressive, but I also loved to watch the Arctic Terns that breed right there and tirelessly kept feeding their young, that were very adult looking in early July.
