We walked past this on our way down to see the river and it is a very nice monument and very well maintained. Nice to see if you are coming to the area to see the river. The day we were there some one had place beautiful flowers on the monument.

Boa Vista is a town of little renown. It is a stopover, and no more. It has, however, a rather pretty square in the centre with some older Portuguese buildings (late 19th century), a new river walk and this dramatic piece of sculpture. It is an interesting piece, and accommodates seemingly every facet of Boa Vista's short and difficult history.... More

In North America, during colonization the Europeans killed and otherwise abused Native Americans. In Brazil, the Portuguese colonization was more peaceful and friendly. As a result, in the Amazon basin some Indian tribes still live in the bronze age and walk around naked. To me, this monument is a symbol of the nonviolent character of the Portuguese colonization. I don't see anything special about it. Well, I see it every week. The name-list is incomplete, many famous pioneers missing. It's central park so you catch a glimps of it, wanting or not.
