The revamped school, turned into the Gandhi Museum is on the top of the list of must see of Rajkot. Excellently managed, efficient and clean, this Corporation run museum depicts life of Mahatma Gandhi. In that it less of a museum and more of a depiction of one man's journey. Diarama, 3D, posters, interactive panels all add to the excitement. Very popular amongst children.

The Mohandas Gandhi High School is a former school converted museum dedicated to the entire life of Gandhi. The name of the school is Alfred High School, but commonly called by the name of it’s most prestigious graduate.

The entrance fee is even more discriminatory than the usual 10x for foreigners and I was conflicted about paying 15x compared to a local. I initially started off visiting a couple of rooms and then an employee began to guide me through the remainder of the museum because it was part of the ticket. There are over forty rooms in total, each depicting the life of Gandhi in chronological order. Each room has a good amount of information and exhibits on display.

Here’s the problem with the guide. The guide takes you through each room and talks about each room. Each room has more information than the guide gives and I would often want to spend more time in the room, except for the guide wanting me to move to the next room. Don’t get me wrong, the guide spoke good English and did a good job of explaining the contents and theme of the room. I just wanted to do things at my own pace.

Overall, the museum is excellent, but the price for foreigners and the guide rushing me through the museum was too annoying.

This school was constructed by political agent Kernel Singh, and was the first English school in the saurashtra region. Originally called Rajkot English School, it was founded on 17 October 1853, and later became a full-fledged high school. By 1868 it came to be known as Rajkot High School. The present building was built by the Nawab of Junagadh, Nawab Nawab Sir Muhammad Rasul Khanji Babi, and was named Alfred High school after Prince Alfred, the Duke of Edinburgh. This School was opened in January, 1875 by Sir Philip Wodehouse, Governor of Bombay. Mahatma Gandhi graduated from this school in 1887 at age of 18. After independence the school was renamed the Mohandas Gandhi High School in honour of Gandhi. In 2017, the school was closed and will soon be converted into museum.

I had been to MG highschool which is very near to Lang Library. It was difficult to locate it and the administration was little off towards the response to the travelers. I think the local authority must give preference to such a historical sites.
