Overview
Sikkim Green Lake Trek
This is a very picturesque trail which combines natural beauty with spectacular views of high peaks. There are vast tracts of thick forest, with several varieties of rhododendrons, other colorful flowers, and birds and many waterfalls on both sides of the trail. Kanchenjunga was one of the first peaks to be attempted by expeditions before world war two. As Nepal was closed, the approach from Sikkim, via the Zemu Glacier, was followed instead. Pre war Everest expeditions also passed through North Sikkim and this trail was part of their route. Today, it is still largely unexplored country as not many parties have been allowed across to Green Lake. (Harish Kapadia).

Four of us booked a trip via Adarsh Tours and Travels. Upon comparing with various other agencies on aspects like pricing and general reviews, we decided to go forward with Adarsh, also owing to the fact that they have been A-listed on the Sikkim Tourism website. Our booking was only for the vehicle, we booked the stays on our own. Planning: The route advised to us after multiple Whatsapp chats was Gangtok- Lachen - Mangan - Pelling- Darjeeling to be covered over 5 days. It was made very clear in the beginning itself that trips to North Sikkim are heavily dependent on weather, that was completely understood and agreed. Upon reaching Gangtok, and having a few days to spare before our trip to Lachen, we met up with Gopal (the owner) at his office, where we were welcomed graciously and the trip was discussed in detail. What we did not know (nor was it made clear to us) was what the package actually included. I will cover that in the later part of this review. Start of the trip: While in Gangtok, the weather already started getting bad. So our trip to Tsongmo lake and Baba Mandir was cancelled. Instead, we were taken to Namchi. The alternate sight seeing options given to us were nowhere close! Char dham, Samdruptse and Sai Mandir instead of the much more better options like Buddha Park, Tarey Bhir etc. Since we had not researched Namchi well, we did not know what to ask for. We discounted this particular part of the decision. Lachen/Lachung: Gopal pro-actively told us that North Sikkim won't happen given the bad weather conditions and advised us to go to Lachung instead and try for Yumthang valley. He helped us with good accommodation, but his attitude did say that it was his way or the highway. We once again discounted this behaviour given that its best to listen to locals when the weather is so bad. We couldn't go to Yumthang too. However, we did get out of Lachung on time before heavy snowfall hit. Mangan: On our way to Mangan, a random discussion with the driver made us aware that our stay is in upper Mangan and not in the main city. It required a permit. Gopal arranged it for us, and we ended up taking a 4 km diversion to reach our hotel. we were told that we may need to pay extra for the diversion, to which we agreed (without knowing the amount), given that Gopal had been supportive and helpful in arranging a permit at the last moment. Something they should have asked us right at the beginning of the trip, given the permit requirements everywhere. Then came the calls and messages to pay up Rs. 4000 for the 4 km diversion. We tried talking reason to Gopal that he refused to listen. He hung up on us multiple times. Mind you, we did not refuse to pay, we only asked him the reason why 4 kms cost us 4000 Rupees! He sent us various "pay now" & "this is not right" messages to which we refused to oblige. On the sidelines, the driver continued to crib about the property we had chosen and how the 4 km diversion was causing him so much discomfort. Pelling: We had a driver change while on our way to Pelling from Mangan. We were again skeptical of what was in store given the exchanges with Gopal 3 days into the trip. We reached Pelling safe and did a few popular spots like Kecheolphari lake & Rabdentse ruins. This time we had done our research on places to see and these two were not all. On asking about the sky walk and some other spots, pat came the additional charges attached to them. We ended up paying, having come all the way to explore Pelling. While in Pelling, we spotted a nice cozy cafe on the way to our hotel. We decided to have an early dinner at the place, but first go back to the hotel to freshen up. The driver refused. This apparently comes under night duty. He dropped us off at the hotel at 6 pm and proceeded to rest for the night. The driver again cribbed about the place we had booked. At this point, we lost it. Clearly we were being ferried around at the driver's convenience. We had been quite cooperative till that point, but this just got out of hand. We were told that the tour includes only point to point pick up and drop to only the places specified and nothing more. None of this was told to us upfront and every word we uttered attracted additional costs. Pelling - Darjeeling: This was a quiet trip. At this point, we just wanted to get done with Adarsh Tours. We reached Darjeeling safe and parted with the driver without a word. No doubt, we were extremely relieved. All in all, Adarsh is meant for foreigners, who will come and pay up without question. If you question them, you are wrong. We have travelled with a lot of tour operators in a lot of states. There is always an argument about what's included and what's not. But there's always a midway that operators and customers arrive at. Never have I ever felt this manipulated. The drivers were nice to talk to, we ensured we made them comfortable and respected the law of land in terms of difficult terrain and driving after dark. None of this was reciprocated! Having missed all of the North Sikkim parts (no refunds by the way, so basically a waste of money), Gopal was hell bent on extracting more and more money from us. We tried reasoning on the basis that so many kms were saved and that additional sight seeing can be included, only to hear him say that charges were day basis and not km basis. But then he still proceeded to quote 4k for a diversion of 4 kms at Mangan saying that is km basis. They may be A-listed in Sikkim, probably the best even, but its surely gotten into their heads. You'll have the best trip with them, just don't ask them questions. I'm not sure whether every tour operator is like this in Sikkim, but please make sure you have all points planned to the tee, else be ready to cough up more cash.

I found their services very satisfactory as they planned everything as per my expectation, hotels used were neat and clean with good behaviour drivers and local representative, available to help me at every step i need them. It is a good company I will recommend this company to my friends and relatives for their northeast trip in future.
