Amazing place, just an hour from Sevilla.
No tarmac, just sandy roads and a paradise for horse riders. Even the bars cater for the people on their horses by having elevated bars, so nobody has to dismount!
Quite interesting churches and lots of good places to stay and eat. Highly recommended!

A great place for visiting when around. Next to Doñana park along the mirador. Can’t miss it as it’s a place for pelgrimage and the tourist attraction of town. Up to the church on the left some stores for candles and tourists amount others. On the right the mirador.

Beautiful church between Sevilla and Huelva in the tiny village of El Rocio. Their main annual celebrations are around the end of May and this place literally gets thousands of pilgrims. Any other time of the year great to visit.
If you want the full experience, Mass during summer time is around 9pm. It is ver very very hot during the day. In the evening you will also see the horses gather in the marisma.
Buy candles in the shop Ian offer them in the nearby candelarium.
You can also do a little tour in a horse carriage and they have ponies for children.
If you are looking for a place to have lunch or dinner try Meson El Tamborilero in nearby Almonte.

The Ermita de Nuestra Senora del Rocio is a large white church that dominates the main square in this unique town, and is where the shrine to the saint can be seen. The church altarpiece is huge and decorated with gold and gilt pillars and statues, all set within a perfectly white domed arch.
Although built in the traditional style of previous churches that have stood here, this building is actually pretty new, having been built in the 1960s to replace the one that was destroyed by the infamous Lisbon earthquake.

This place looks like like a village in a cowboy film, sandy road, small houses, a cute church in the middle of the village and horses with wagon on the street. The church is not really exceptional, full of local, the virgin Mary statue on the altaar is very small. It's such an experience to be here

This small town, not paved, since horses are up and down the streets, has a very nice church with Virgen del Rocio. Pilgrims visit this church all year round but the main feasts are in May/June. The virgin itself is very small, but beautifully placed and decorated. There are plenty of restaurants and shops around and a beautiful lake. The visit is well worth it.

A strange strange place. A village dedicated to worship and pilgrimage. A place that looks like it transplanted itself into cowboy country US... wide sandy streets, hitching posts for horses everywhere. Enjoyed looking at a horseman being served a beer while on horseback on the street outside the bar.
Don't miss the beautiful church. Rebuilt several times, it is unusually bright and has a beautiful altarpiece.
Even if it looks somewhat remote, the town is well worth a visit.

The village is basically a dusty Main Street full of souvenir shops selling the usual things. The church is small and the only thing to visit in the whole place.
Not worth the long drive required to get there as is very isolated.

Being the good atheist that I am these places fascinate me. Portugal has its Fátima, the Basque Country its Arantzazu, Zaragoza its Virgen del Pilar, Guadalupe its Virgin of Guadalupe, and finally Andalucia, especially Sevilla, has its Rocio. This is the site where supposedly a statue of the Virgin Mary was found centuries ago. It is venerated here and known as the White Dove or the Queen of the Marshes. Although there are always people here, either inside the church or outside in the many restaurants and gift shops, the place is overrun with pilgrims during the months of May or June. On Monday of Pentecosts the statue is carried out through the streets of the village. It is well worth a visit, not for any religious reason in my case, but to better understand an important cultural manifestation of the Spanish.

Very nice Church in a lovely small town. Was visited by Pope John Paul II, which was an interesting tidbit. It sits on the edge of a beautiful Marsh, recommend seeing for a bit.
