Cold wind and many places were closed the to this being a beach community. BUT, if you want to be alone to walk the beach and explore the dunes it is a great time, just dress for the weather. Drawback is there was some damaged areas of boardwalk through the dunes that were hazards to children and since it was off season it appears that nobody was checking/fixing things. Family still had fun and enjoyed the Parque Dunar and beach area.

We were staying in Seville and decided on an afternoon at the beach so drove the 80km (1 hour) to Matalascanas. A beautiful place, but to say it was like a ghost town would be an understatement, we probably saw 4 or 5 people the whole time we were there. No beach front cafes open and a little run down if you ask me.

I'm sure it is busy during peak season, but I can only comment on what we experienced.

The park or the village? the first is exellent with proper activities to a natural park you can fell the effort to resist the turistic pressure and yet they keep working with a serious envyromental target.
The village makes real the expression "cold bed " a huge amount of houses only open a few days per year.

We walked along the coast by taking the road from the town to east until the development ends - plenty of car parking is available. A stunningly beautiful deserted beach backed by sand dunes. You can walk for miles and miles. The sea is quite rough - but great for a gentle paddle. There is no shade - so wear a hat. There are cafes and bars for food and a drink when you return .
However, the major problem is that the organised tours take the tourist bus along the beach - and because it can be uneven take the easiest route - and not very cautious about walkers - on our idyllic dream walk it was a huge shock! Not sure if this is environmentally friendly tourism......

Awesome little spot off the beaten path if you get tired of the historical streets of Seville or on your way thru. Pretty much a Holliday spot for sevillians. But as a international you'll be greeted with open arms. The beach is so massive. You can buy 1.5L bottles of tinto de verrano in the kiosks on the beach. Knowing a little Spanish here will get you much further ahead. We stayed hostel Victoria a hotel ran by a guys named Mario. He was so welcoming and generous we had such a great time. Awesome place!

While the beach is lovely and goes on for miles and miles the same can not be said about the very modern and ugly town. The restaurants are almost all the same and while they do do some good food it's catering to the tourists. With the beautiful donana national park surrounding it the town feels very tacky and out of place.

At the beginning I must say I haven't visited the centre of Matalascanas and the main beach. I went to the right were the beach is still sandy and the water warm but there are not so many people and you can really admire the beauty of this place and switch off.

Although the wind is strong, don't let it belie you - the sun is strong and the higher the factor in your cream is, the better. Thanks to the wind however, you don't feel this strength and the sun is not isistent. Paragliding fan will be happy - in Matalascanas you can enjoy paragliding.

There are bars on the beach where you can buy fresh seafood and beverages.

Waves are not so strong and bathing and swimming is possible.

And remember about the sunblock!!!

Sadly this has been true for so much of Spain . People just drop their litter , throw it from their cars ,walk past it .

We picked up a large bag of plastic cups, bags, bottles and waste walking to and from the beach ..Meanwhile Spaniards just ignore it ... WHY ???

I've never seen so much plastic rubbish , even the beautiful old town of El Rocio has millions of pieces of plastic spread through its lovely sandy streets .

Do Spaniards not care about their land ...About our planet ?

Wonderful, beautiful beach! Not crowded, beach & water is clean, and the water is warmer than at the beach in Cadiz. And it's way closer to Seville where we were staying. We lazed around and played in the waves.
The restaurants nearby are ok, not great. The food will keep you from starving but that's it.
To get to the beach you go through Donana National park. The park info center was not where our GPS said it was, so we didn't find that. But the park was pretty. Lots of storks and their huge nests on top of poles. After a day at the beach it's nice to drive through the park & look around.
