St Mary's Church is located on the edge of the river next to Hitchin Market. There are lots of nice views of the church from the riverside so make sure you take time to enjoy the scenery.

You can go in the church under normal circumstances and the grounds are open to walk around and explore the gravestones.

Well worth visiting if you are in the area.

Pleasant setting

This is a fourteenth century place of worship located within Hitchin town centre. Carvings throughout the roofing are visible and there is a degree of splendour to its exterior. It is found next to a grassy verge and small lake with a water feature at its centre – it is seemingly a popular meeting place.

Gorgeous church in a perfect town centre setting

There's hundreds of years of history and tradition to be savoured inside, but you're also welcome to take a short cut through as you stroll around the town centre or sit down with a sandwich by the waterside and feed the ducks with your leftovers.

Hitchin is my home town so I see this beautiful church every time I go into town it really is worth a visit as it’s so beautiful inside I once sang in this church with the school choir and the acoustics are truly amazing I would recommend a visit you won’t be disappointed.

Great place to meet people away from Hitchin ample parking and barn has heaters if colder. Not such a large choice of cakes but still enough to tempt you despite good intentions to resist! Staff really friendly and helpful.

A trip to find peace and voluntary work

Like most people there is an expectation that churches and suchlike and their staff can provide both .

Unhappily ,neither happened for me here at Hitchin Church .I felt treated like the Biblical Samaritan .

A sense of not being loved and trusted .
I shall not go back again .

Nostalgic Old World Charm at St. Mary Church
Aug 2019
So here I was at the St. Mary’s church of the quaint little town of Hitchin. Just few steps away from the main bus stop of Hitchin and very close to the town center, the St. Mary Church is the centre of the life at Hitchin. A small lake and plenty of ducks welcomed the visitors at the Church. The church dates to 14th or 15th century or possibly earlier.

In contrast to grandeur seen in some of the other monuments in UK, this church seemed worn out and need of repair – not sure it was an inherently an architectural feature or depredation of weather over the years. Since the church was closed around the noon time I visited, I could not get a chance to enter. Nonetheless it was nostalgic Old World Charm at St. Mary Church at Hitchin.

It was a shame you found us closed on that day. if you come on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday at most times you will find Stewards there to greet you. the outside of the building is in good repair but the soft stonework does decay fast. The building is 600 years old, and the interior is glorious, if you find a chance to visit again please do.

Amazingly light and inspiring building.

Just metres from the bustle of the thriving Hitchin town centre. The interior is huge, cool and sublimely peaceful. Many windows are clear and this gives a lightness and welcome. This makes the windows that are glazed in medieval glass all the more amazing. The great East window, above the high altar is particularly inspiring.
Being right at the heart of this fine market town, it’s the kind of place a foreigner would consider as quintessentially English, and wonderful, with its music akin to a cathedral.
