I visited here with my tour guide not realizing that this is the largest American cemetery in Europe. While this site probably sees a fraction of the visitors compared to the Omaha Beach cemetery, it is no less powerful and moving. This site houses roughly 14,000 soldiers, compared with 9,000 at Omaha. The grounds are kept in impeccable shape. Walking among the crosses I was overcome with emotion looking at the sheer number and space filled with the fallen. Being located seemingly out of nowhere in the middle of the forest and farm land, it really helps bring into perspective what kind of geography the US soldiers were fighting and dying in during 1918. While most Americans tend to overlook our involvement in the Great War due to what happened afterward, I personally am glad I had the chance to visit this site and honor the fallen. It has inspired me to learn more about these young men who served from 1917-1918.

This cemetery is immaculately maintained and pays solemn tribute to fallen soldiers. It is located on 130 acres and there is a chapel and a fountain. The biggest problem is that it is in the middle of nowhere-off of a country road that is off of another country road, that is off of another country road and very far from any amenities. The Visitor Center had a sign that said “no public restroom” and there was nowhere to stop in the greater area. The Visitor Center attendant was not very welcoming so we skipped it and just stopped to pay tribute to the fallen soldiers.

We had a tour booked for Verdun and decided to do a detour to see this cemetery. We are so glad we did. There was no one else around so we just walked up and down for an hour or so.
It was totally silent and the whole place is immaculately presented with no litter whatsoever.

Very tastefully set out and suitable for the motoring tourist, but the Visitor Centre was a delightful collection of information - far more that expected.

Don't skip the visitors center where there is an interesting exhibit on the history of the cemetery and some of its "inhabitants".

You get a sense of the scale of American sacrifice at this cemetery. 15000 headstones. One battle but the one that won the peace.

This is a large and beautiful cemetery, so allow plenty of time. Has visitor center and chapel. Final resting place and memorial to those who gave their lives so that we might live in freedom. Includes graves for unidentified remains, and a Wall of the Missing for soldiers whose remains were never found.

This place is world class in its honouring and tasteful in its purpose.
The impressive facades and grounds do justice to those who fought, died and survived the horrific conflict that brought them here.
We came away appreciative of a well kept memorial, impressed at the educational display and pleased to see an attempt to right the wrongs of past oversights to honour every soldier.

Impressive cemetery, like the American one in Normandy at Colleville -sur-Mer and other memorial American Cemeteries.
Each one of them designed exactly alike.
14.000 soldiers dead. Incomprehensible.
The place is peaceful and very beautiful. Almost to make you forget the cruelty and ugliness of death, destruction and warfare. There’s no such thing as a glorious death for these young men.
Never make war again.
