A beautiful environment with all sorts of things to see. You need to be properly prepared though, but it's definatly worth it, just loved it.

We could glimpse most of the mountain although it was topped by clouds. Spectacular, it looked like someone had sprinkled icing sugar on it.

Mount Ngauruhoe is an active volcano made from layers of lava - I guess this was the main reason we decided not to hike it. The location of the mount is superior though. Tongariro National Park offers breathtaking views and perfect snaps opportunity. If you're a fan of Lord of the Rings, this place is a must-visit. Also there are... More

no need for ski passes if your on a budget just stick to the free areas ( there are a lot) there is a blue lake near the car park that we happened upon my mistake . look out for it . its worth the hassle :)

It's a classic volcano shape with steep scree slopes and crater at the summit. When ascending try and stick to the rocky spine as on the scree you go up two and down one each step. Near the top it's easier to hang left onto the ridge then down into the valley and up to the summit crater to your... More

Was doing a solo trek of the Tongariro Crossing today (June 16th) and although not planning to climb Mt Ngauruhoe just looked too inviting. When climbing up go via the permanent rocky outcrops. It looks dicey but is so much faster than sliding back on the scree. Even though it's winter there was only snow/ice the last 100 meters. I... More

What should you know about the the alpine walk. Weather is important. You want to do this walk on a good day and the weather can change quickly here especially in fall. Dress properly, sunscreen, pack water, snacks, warm and rain shell just in case. You can park your car at either end and walk but you need to either... More

Mount doom was amazing, any LOTR fan has to check this out! Me and my partner are both fit and healthy fell runners and have recently completed the inka trail, but we still found the climb a challenging. we made sure we fully prepared for this taking high carb foods and plenty of water. The view from the top left... More
