After walking for aprox. 30 minutes from Sperlonga old city, we arrive and are told that their card machine is out of order - cash only.
The price was only EUR 2 per person, but we had no cash at hand. The guy just shrugged his shoulders, letting us know this was not his problem.
How about letting visitors come inside, when you have broken equipment and no ATM nearby?

The tiberian villa is a marvel. Not so much left of it but one can easily imagine what a spectacular villa it would have been. The museum displays the statues that were once outside....

Easy place to check out. Can walk up from the beach from the city of Sprongla. Sculptures are cool and not a large place. Could be there about 2 or 3 hours. Don't miss the grotto outside. Would not take a child younger than 5 in this place.

This was a nice area and small museum to check out. Quite in the off season. Would walk along the beach and avoid the highway. Would avoid driving if possible. Beautiful grounds to explore with ocean views.

Sperlonga Archaeological Museum, Tiberius Villa & Grotto. Gigantic sculpture of Ulysses (nobody) blinding the cyclops Polyphemus (found originally in the grotto, intended for fire light, water’s reflection, live music, dance & epic story telling.)

Some culture is always good during holidays. I reccomend this place, especially the cave. When temperature is high, use an umbrella against the sun, its pretty hot between the stones.

Took a cab from Sperlango to Tiberius' villa and grotto. The villa is ruins but a new museum with lots of windows and light house wonderful statues, frescoes, and pieces of pottery. There are English descriptions to accompany the Italian. The walk to the villa ruins and grotto is well marked. The grotto is amazing -the water and rocks and then looking up from the water to the town nestled in the hills. Took us 2 hours to see everything

Built in the Republican period it is best known for the cave used by Tiberius as a dining room. Several gusts were killed in a rockfall but Tiberius survived. There is an excellent museum on site with reassembled sculptures from the cave. The best known being ""the blinding of Polyphemus"" & also worth seeing is the sea monster Scylla eating Odysseus' men.

My wife and I are using Fondi as a base to explore the south Lazio region. Our first outing, to Sperlonga and the Villa of Tiberius, was an excellent adventure. We picked up an 8:10 bus that runs along Via Sassari to Via della Stazione then to the Fondi-Sperlonga train station before heading to Sperlonga itself, 12 miles away The fare is 1.5 euros and takes about twenty minutes. The final stop is in the small municipal square at the top of the hill on which old Sperlonga sits. Down the hill to the west is the long stretch of beaches and restaurants for which Sperlonga is known.
Across the small square is a marked trail heading downhill and to the east and to the archeolgical museum, the remains of the villa, and the grotto, about one mile away. At the bottom of the hill, the trail wanders through a parking/camping area. Look for signs indicating a walking and biking trail. The trail passes orchards and small farm plots before reaching the museum.
Others have described the museum, villa, and grotto, all of which we enjoyed. The museum’s displays were very informative and the reconstruction of the massive sculpture “The Blinding of Polyphemus” was memorable.
On the way back, when we reached the bottom of the Sperlonga hill, we took a long series of steps back up the hill rather than the trail, stopped at the cafe on the terrace off the municipal square, and looked out over the beaches and Tyrrhennian Sea. We then walked down to the main drag along the beach, where we caught the bus back to Fondi.
