The museum and art gallery are fantastic. It is wheel chair friendly and free although there is a gratuity box if you wish to donate. The Museum has a great display of historical items and photos of Whakatane and the neighbouring district. There is a fascinating description of how this volcanic area came about too. The Art Gallery has different... More

Excellent modern library. Current books to borrow, plenty of seats to read in the library. Staff very helpful. Recent change on how to find the topic you are after has really helped to find the book you are looking for. Clean toilets. Internet access. Ancestry research area. Nice and quiet place to study.

Modern facility, well laid out museum exhibits and art exhibitions that change frequently. Look out for the Molly Morpeth Art competition in the first quarter of each year that attracts works from all around New Zealand

We were visiting Whakatane and stumbled across this very comprehensive library facility. It was exhibiting the work of local artists and we spent a interesting hour exploring these works along with the very sound exhibition of the founding and development of Whakatane from its Maori origins to the present resort town.

One minute you are walking around a maori art exhibit next minute I am looking at contemporary art and art for sale.....confusing way of moving from one art form to another

A world class exhibition of art. I visited this collection of works 5 times. Exhibitions change about every 6 weeks or so. The gallery is modern and a real asset to Whakatane with a great museum collection to compliment the centre.

Did not visit this for quite a while after it was first opened as my experience of small-town museums had not been good in the past. Took overseas visitors their, and learnt so much myself! Will go back again and again as they have new exhibits regularly - and so far they all have been up to the same high... More

Te Koputu provides a space to explore local history both maori and settler. In a small area the museum presents some interesting insight into some of the critical developments in the district from the confiscation of Maori land, settlement by Pakeha to the development of industry and community. A well worth visit for the traveller who wants an insight in... More
