Join the White Island Tours crew aboard the luxury cruiser 'PeeJay' for a 6 hour adventure to explore New Zealand's only active marine volcano - White Island.

Sitting 49km off the coast of New Zealand's North Island, this is one of the world's most accessible live volcanos. With the majority of the volcano sitting beneath the sea it means we are able to disembark directly into the crater complex - no mountain climbing required.

Being a live volcano there is little doubt that White Island is home to New Zealand's most impressive geothermal activity. Visitors are able to get up close to roaring steam vents, bubbling pits of mud, hot volcanic streams and the amazing lake of steaming acid. The vivid hues of yellow and orange resulting from the abundant sulphur on the island make it a photographer's dream.

Experienced guides will lead visitors on a two hour exploration of the inner crater, providing a fascinating commentary on the geology of the island as well as stories of attempts to mine sulphur. Along with volcanic and geothermal features, you will see the remains of the sulphur factory which have survived multiple eruptions since being abandoned in the 1930s.

Once back aboard PeeJay there may be time for a swim from the boat before being served a light packed lunch which can be enjoyed while viewing the outer walls of the island where Pohutukawa forests grow and large Australasian Gannet colonies exist.

Our journey home often provides the opportunity to spend time viewing dolphins, whales and other marine life. We hold the necessary government permits to interact with these animals and it's a great way to end an already amazing day.

Tours depart daily (weather permitting) from Whakatane.

We really enjoyed the day and the staff were very friendly, helpful and professional. White Island is an extraordinary landscape and well worth a visit. The boat trip is close to 90 minutes each way so take that into account.

Outstanding tour. The trip over by boat was a tad long for those without sea legs, but really interesting. We were lucky enough to spot a family pod of Orcas. Our captain managed to get us very close and we got some amazing photos. The volcanic island was breath taking (literally), but the gas masks helped. Standing on the edge... More

A breezy day, but our group had good sea legs (and in some cases a few sea sickness pills). Quite amazing to get close up to a 🌋 great guides, unhurried and relaxed day. Lots of interesting information too. Highly recommend this tour and the lovely lovely campsites at Ohope beach nearby.

The powered catamaran was named The Phoenix. The captain and crew were excellent and knowledgable. On the way out we were able to stop in a pod of dolphin. The largest I had ever been in. (Lived on our boat in FL often sailed to the Bahamas) Our tour guide on the Island was Nathan. Very knowledgable, enthusiastic and outright... More

I'll give a very honest and unbiased review here with all things considered. Please see my many TripAdvisor reviews for good reads on my travel experiences! https://www.tripadvisor.com/members/Erin_leigh79 Hubby and I did the White Island Tour via boat one morning. The drive in our own car from Rotorua wasn’t bad and we go there in plenty of time to check in,... More

This is a perfect day for ocean lovers and people interested in Geology / Volcanoes and natural beauty. The volcano is approx. 48km offshore. The company's motorized, fast cat is well designed for the job. Porpoises frolicked around the boat about midway. Ideal trip for families with teen-aged kids. Due attention was given to safety aspects at sea and entering... More

Absolutely outstanding tour to an incredibly special natural environment. We prefer independent travel however guided tour is the only way to visit White Island. This tour is exceptionally operated. Due to rough seas following extreme rain, our tour was cancelled twice. This was done professionally and we were kept informed the whole time. Our tour proceeded on our last day... More

The trip can seem expensive but believe me, it's worth every penny! We were lucky with the weather but less with the wind... meaning that the boat trip was VERY chaotic... But the crew members were very kind and helpful, making sure everybody was fine and giving advise to feel less sick. The tour on the island is long enough,... More

Simply amazing, the island is just the most fabulous place I have visited, like being on another planet whilst being surrounded by the beauty of New Zealand. We were very lucky to see a whale on the way across to the island which just added to the experience. The crew where great, a few people were ill on the crossing... More
