A Trip Back In Time

Come and meet our friendly staff and take a relaxing ride on our heritage steam train through the beautiful Mendip Countryside. The return journey takes approximately 40 minutes and is a 5 mile round trip.

You pay once and you can ride the trains all day!

As well as riding the train you can visit our engine shed and workshop and see our restoration projects up close, while away an hour or so chatting away to our very knowledgeable volunteers. We also have a signal box and miniature railway (these are only open on specific dates), small museum, a big shop and cafe serving delicious homemade meals each day we are in steam.

We also offer Cream Teas, High Teas and Sunday Lunches on specific dates which need to be booked in advance as they do sell out very quickly.

Our season runs from March to October and then we run our Santa Specials in December.

We had a good 4 hour visit to the railway. Although the train ride is short it was still very atmospheric. The carriages are restored to a high standard and it was great to get up close to the engine. In fact there is a train workshop which you can walk through, which was interesting. The cafe serves a simple... More

We came here with our sons (4 and 6) and had a wonderful day out. Considering that the actual train journey is short, it still felt like a great day and we weren't short of things to do. The slogan on the ESR brochure is "The Friendly Steam Railway" and I can honestly say that they lived up to this... More

This is a heritage line run by volunteers. you can see my full review on my youtube channel, out during May. I use a mobility scooter so was keen to see they made an effort to update their website with lots of information. In reality, I found a few issues, all revolving around ramps and inclines. We visited on a Friday and whilst access to the platform and toilets was open, the cafe was closed. A great venue for getting some lovely pics of the station and rolling stock. We will be back to take a ride! Well maintained, very clean toilets.

Blessed with good weather for late March, we enjoyed the short trip aboard the train whilst we had lunch on Mothers day. There were a few pauses in both the trip, and the service, which made the experience feel a little drawn out, however at the same time it was relaxing enough. The food was of an excellent standard, and... More

An excellent preserved line near Shepton Mallet linked inexorably with David Shepherd, the well known artist. I tend to have my wife to tag along on my railway trips and she appeared to particularly like this one... As usual in today's world of railways, the East Somerset appeared to be well run and safe for both staff and visitors. Good... More

Simple preserved railway, tries hard for the young ones, not a great deal to see for the steam buffs though. Dont think the railway quite matches the north somerset railway, which is on of the best in the UK. Cheap ride and friendly staff. But the ride does not go anywhere sadly.

Just called in for coffee and a quick look at the engines - stayed all day! I am a cream/afternoon tea fanatic but when I looked on their website all the seats for the tea were sold out, however when we arrived we asked at the ticket office and they had cancelations so we booked the tea. Absolutely incredible value... More
