Like most cities in the 14th century low lands Zierikzee built a 'Gasthuis' where people without shelter could be accommodated. Usually drifters and other people in need like the sick and poor elderly without relatives were provided basic support here. Always first a chapel was built (to take care of the soul) and later a large rectangular room or hall was added. You can still observe this pattern in the present-day Gasthuiskerk.
At the south side of the structure facing the square you can see an arcaded gallery. This extension was made later (in 1651) and served local grain merchants and their customers. It is the reason why many observers including me, at first glance think the building is a market hall of some sort. However it is a church. The 'Gasthuis' was demolished in 1814, the 'Gasthuiskerk' (the church part) survived until today and is used by the Dutch reformed community in Zierikzee.
