Deva fortress (nicknamed "the Key to Mures River")- the symbol of the town -is there since 1269. The fortress is open daily and admission is free. The climb to the fortress is a 45-minute walk on a reasonable path.
Gives you a great overview on the city.

Go up the GATE 1 (poarta 1) by car if you are not willing to climb all the steps. There are a few left even there, but easyer. Lovely view from the top of the city and surroundings. The fortress was being renovated while we were there and the funicular wasn't working either.

We had a stop here during our trip from Hunedoara to Sibiu. The fortress is on the top of a hill and you can get there via a funicular or walking 1000 steps. We got the 2nd option but the view on the top definitely deserved it. The castle is ruined but well preserved with many interventions that help visitors to enjoy the experience like wooden stairs and things like that

The fortress of Deva offers a fantastic view over the entire region. It is partially renovated, but here and there are signs of kitsch. You can walk up there over a winding alley through the forest or take the funicular. Guided tours on demand.

Really a fine place to visit. I really loved to have a walk, up in the fortress. The railed telecabin is quite a nice adventure. There are not a lot of things to do in the fortress, but you can spend half an hour just watching the views.

I will not tell you about the history of the place I will tell you about how I felt , history you can dig up on the web if you feel like.
Getting to the fortress can be done in 2 ways - 1 would be taking a "walk" , actually is a climb uphill so if you are not in the best physical shape it would take a while.
The second , faster and with a certain "wow" factor is the cable car. However during weekends it gets crowded by the hour - so if you decide on the cable car, be prepared to wait in line. The round trip is 20 Ron - a little above 4 euros with discounts for the kids, students and elderly.
Once at the top of the hill you can walk around and enjoy the views - on a clear day it can be spectacular.
The fortress has been resorted in the past years and can be quite enjoyable. Fresh air and when I was visiting wasn't very crowded.
Overall a great experience - I recommend you take a trip to Deva when you can.

The municipality should spend more funds to at least prevent this old structure from decay if not renovating it. It is after all an important benchmark in Romania's historical heritage. Easy access to get to it. You can drive up to it, you can take the funicular or walk if you are up to it. Getting to the top platform from the gate...that is another story. You walk walk up the ramps of if you dare take the steeps steps, I counted around 300. Exhausting on a hot day.
When finally up you cant get in the inner court, big lock on the gate with a "Watch for vipers" warning sign. You can only go around to various parts of the citadel but not in the main court, that, again, should be fixed
It gives you a nice view of the city below and the surroundings though. Over all , not bad but it could and should be a little better.

Dominant site, viewed from a far and really overlooking the small city beneath.
Doesn't seems to be in the best shape, though.

We walked up, it's a well marked path ending in a long stairway, but there's also the option of the funicular, 20 lei for a return trip...the fort is definitely worth visiting, and the views are amazing!

The old Hungarian castle of Deva sits on top of a volcanic cone right above downtown. It is largely untouched by ill advised reconstructions, still many parts of it are in reasonable shape. The views from the castle are outstanding. Mercifully, an
incine railway takes visitors up and down the steep slope.
