Don't visit Lagoa Comprida through the dam. Turn left and go through nature, it much prettier if you don't see the dam wall.
P.S. if your dog loves water don't go there in the middle of winter or you'll have to forcefully remove him of the water, no matter if it's 6 degrees Celsius outside.

I went to Lagoa Comprida as it is the starting point for a hike to the amazing scenery of Covão dos Conchos. However, Lagoa Comprida is an attraction itself, with many families heading there in the summer to spend the day on its shoreline, swimming, picnicking and sun-bathing.

It has a car-park located adjacent to the road as well as a small shop selling regional products and a bar.

Lagoa Comprida is the largest reservoir of the Estrela region and, in addition to supplying water to the area, it is also a source of hydro-electric power. The first Lagoa Comprida Dam was constructed in 1912, when it was the first such engineering project in Portugal. At that time, the dam was only 6 meters high. The dam was enlarged in 1934 and 1966 and now measures 28 meters high, 2,500 meters long and 130 meters wide. The dam is built from granite that was quarried from a nearby location.

If you are visiting the Lagoa and have a couple of extra hours to spare, I highly recommend making the hike to see Covão dos Conchos (about an hour in each direction).

Its worth the drive up there. Can feel the fresh air all around, and even if lucky when not a tour bus (or a few) are parked there, then you can just ear the winds.

This is a beatiful spot for walkabouts, photography, fishing, canoeing.. in Summer and Autumn.
In Winter you'll be astonished with all the snow glued to its walls, its so so beautiful.
After you can warm yourself in the little bar right next to it, local products sold.

Lagoa comprida is a fantastic lagoon in Serra da Estrela, not far from Manteigas, Covilha e Gurada towns, and just a few kilometers from the "Torre" 2,000 meters above sea level. The lagoon is huge in length and there's some local gifts, cheeses, spirits, etc, to buy. Really nice winter time with a lot of snow and ski track close by, and also fantastic in the summer.

The “Dam” of the “Lagoa Comprida” has been constructed started from a “Natural Lake”, and became so the principal water reserve of the “Serra de Estrella”, also the great hydro electrical potential was also one of the reasons to start the building of this dam..
The Lagoa Comprida is the biggest massif lake on this height and one of the first engineering works of this nature in Portugal, the building works started in the year 1911.
From the street one you will see the great granite stone wall of the lake, the granite blocks were brought there by the “Glaciers” and called “Blocos erráticos” or “Traveling stones”.
With a lithographical study of the stones they were able to reveal the origin of the stones as well the movement from the glaciers themselves.
The lake was also a few years ago one of the places used for an official training off the “Fly-fish” teams who were participating on the World Champion ship of “Fly-Fishing”.
We had the pleasure to have the official team from Japan and New Zealand in our B&B in that time.
All together the Lagoa Comprida, is worth a stop on your way to Torre or Covilha.
