Interesting to see, & the colours are very vibrant.
You have to pay €3 to a guy in a caravan at the parking area. Not really worth €3 as you won't be there very long.
Be warned - there are no signposts!!! We made the mistake of continuing straight, & it brought us down towards the sea. Nice view, but it was absolutely roasting, & took about 20 mins!
So - instead, if you only want to see the quarry, walk about 5 mins past parking, on the track. You will come to a wide area, with trees on the right, up a liitle hill. There's a track to the left, or right, for a longer walk around the lake.
Or, do what we did, & go straight up, over the hill, to a high viewing point. See my photos.

OMG guys this site is definitively worth a visit! Is a very short drive from Otranto's Port, unfortunately is not touristically promoted nor well sign posted but if you have a navigation device, you can use the following coordinates that will lead you directly on site.
N: 40°7'54" E: 18°30'2"
You could even take a bath in the cave. Enjoy it!

The Cava di Bauxite is the result of bauxite (used in the production of aluminium) having been extracted in the past. When the sun is on the sides and on the water it is attractive.
Finding it is not easy as it's not well sign-posted and you have to drive up a track before walking across a field to the site. It's about south of Otranto on the coast road. You need a car to access it unless you are a keen hiker.

We arrived before 9am, there was nobody there at the parking, so we went, took pictures and left, the guy to pay the parking was just arriving. Honestly, this isn't worth paying for, it's just an abandoned mine, you spend a few minutes there to look at the nice variety of colours and that's about it.

Only a few minutes drive from Otranto and definitely worth a visit, colours are great and there is also a lovely walk along the coast from there!

Perfect for dawn and sunset times. The colors of the landscape are amazing! Consider that the soil is dusty and will stain your clothes! Do not dress fancy and with light colors!

The city has a pretty center with the famous mosaics in the cathedral worthwhile. The setting is very nice, with the old city walls opening up towards the seat

We parked our own car and walked to Lago Bauxite. We took some pictures and we walked back. Within 5 minutes the window of the car was smashed and we have been robbed. The view is great, but unfortunately the place is not safe. Don't leave any belongings in the car and be carefull. If you look around you will see a lot of glass everywhere.

Grazie
Written 21 August 2019
Noi abbiamo fatto tutto il percorso in infradito senza nessun problema!

È possibile arrivare a piedi?
