Porto Antico in Monopoli is imo the most picturesque and tranquil place in Monopoli.
It's set in the middle of old town, entering through a small arch - a small and calm bay with fishermen and their blue boats. Grab a sandwich and drink at Gustavo's around the corner and have your meal here soaking up the beauty.

This is arguably the most picturesque location in the city of Monopoli. You have the beautiful blue boats sitting in the deep blue water. For a backdrop you have a small lighthouse at one end, the back wall of the castle, and the bell tower of a 5th Century church.
Walk the dock and you will probably see fishermen working on their nets or gear.
This area has been a port for as many at 17,000 years. Archaeological excavations carried out between 1985 and 2011 by the Archaeological Superintendence of Puglia revealed evidence of a fortified basin on this site in the fifth century B.C..
That basin was later expanded during the Roman period to include a wall and fortified portal. And that Roman portal was later incorporated into the castle built by Charles V.
Other excavations have uncovered evidence of this area having been inhabited as early as the twelfth to fifteenth century B.C. by the Mesopotamians. Further evidence suggests they had strong commercial ties to the Mycenaeans of that era.

It's hard to think of a better place to take a photo. Even before I visited this place, I feel like I've seen paintings and prints of this corner of Italy.

The old harbour area is a good place to spend some time. With a small lighthouse at one end, the back wall of the castle in the middle, and the picture-postcard small blue boats tied up in the small harbour, this is a lovely little place. You can walk around virtually all of it at the water's edge. There are places to sit too. Some small restaurants have terraces or windows that look out over it.

Porto Antico (Old Port) is quite the spectacle what with the red and blue boats (gonzo), the white-washed buildings with their intricately shaped balconies, the weather-beaten fisherman and the sense of serenity. It could take you minutes to view all this but to really appreciate it, you need to spend some time enjoying, relaxing and taking it all in.

The Porto Antico is the old port of Monopoli and you will find lots of gozzi (fishing boats) here in a wonderful scenery , framed by the old city wall.
A must see in Monopoli.

Plenty of seating possibility where tourists and locals can take some rest in the shade. If you do not take a picture here, your camera must be broken!

Short walking, half day, pictures in the oldtown, cafe, seafood restorants, okay for a half day. Must be known, that all the restaurants are closed between 14-17h, if you would like to eat, it is impossible.

For a working port, this is a fantastic place. It's loaded with history and also loaded with charm. Plenty of places to eat and drink. A huge range of photo opportunities. We caught a festival on the Sunday and the place rocked! Market stalls, boat trips, bands, dancing ....... We loved it.

This port creates a beautiful scenario because it has white Stone all over the city wall, the water is clear and Blue, the boats attract people to buy fish and there are art paintings on the path.
