Between Santa Maria di Leuca and Otranto, we were amazed by the breathtaking beauty of Ciolo, which is a deep and spectacular canyon carved by the Adriatic Sea with crystal clear and transparent waters and its many caves accessible by boat. The canyon is spanned by a bridge.
We learned that "il Ciolo" derives from the thieving magpies, known as "Ciole" in the local dialect, who lived in the region.
At Ciolo, we unfortunately did not have time to do the very fines "Sentiero delle Cipolliane" and "Sentiero del Ciolo" hikes, allowing to discover the beautiful Mediterranean scrub and rock caves.
A little paradise on the earth! We'll come back!!!

This place offers the perfect place to walk and swim, there are two parking areas, if you're not interested in walking much, I suggest parking just next to the bridge like most people do, then there are steep steps down to the water area. If you would like a bit more of a walk, then I suggest driving to 'Sentiero Del Ciolo', the car park there is very big, from there you can walk to the bridge and to the water area. It's well worth a visit, the scenery is spectacular.

Free parking & a great restaurant close by. Take shoes though, the rocks can be sharp & slippery in places.

On the advice of friends we went along and we were not dissapointed but absolutely thrilled and so will you if you go. On the day parking was easy and it was not very busy but I imagine it gets that way as the summer goes on. Regardless, if you are in the area it is definitely worth a look. Bring shoes for swimming and your dive masks. There are some nice plaxes to get a bite to eat very close by so it is user friendly.
