They squeezed us dry of every last yen at this massive bike rental operation. They have a huge selection of bikes and friendly staff who, however, apply the letter of the law with no discretion. We rented two e-bikes for the day at 8,000 yen. Upon returning them at 5:00 we asked to rent two regular bikes until the next afternoon. When we returned these two bikes early the next afternoon we were charged another 12,000 yen - two full day rental fees for two bikes that we didn't even have for 24 hours! We were charged 20,000 yen for bikes over less than two days. We felt ripped off and, what's more, one of the regular bikes had a kickstand that didn't work and poor brakes.

A couple of friends and I rented bikes from this place and cycled them to Imabari via the Shimanami Kaido, with a detour onto the Yumeshima Kaido along the way. No complaints. Our bikes worked perfectly fine. In fact, one of my friends is an experienced cyclist and told us her bike at least was very good, albeit a bit old.
It's true what the other reviewers say, that they don't rent equipment for repairing your bike if you run into trouble along the way. We never had any trouble, but we read that there were service stations all along the way, and also companies that would pick up your bike for you if you truly were not able to continue. My friend brought her own kit, so we weren't particularly worried.
Also mentioned is the fact that you don't get your deposit back if you return your bike at another island, which you would naturally do if you are cycling the Shimanami Kaido. I don't see how this can be considered a complaint since it's clearly stated on their website, and it's entirely fair that they would charge a fee to move bikes between stations. The price isn't unreasonable at all, IMHO.
All in all, would use this company.

Rented out bikes in Onomichi and spent the day cycling the different islands and bridges until we arrived in Imabari.
We went really early in the morning in an attempt to get good bikes but the selection still wasnt great, the bikes were average at best and some didn't have a great gear selection but they done the job for the one day anyways.
The cycle itself was beautiful, the coastline was very pretty and the bridges are really impressive.
The cycle is a little challenging, the climbs to get onto the bridges will have you sweating and there is one very challenging climb towards the last bridge. We were 3 young and active couples so managed to finish it without to any major issues.
All in all a really enjoyable and beautiful day. Would definately recommend it to anyone interested in see a lot in one day and arent afraid to get a little sweaty and tired.
Tips, bring a backpack with lots of water and food, we spent the day stopping for sandwich and snacks as you do get hunger and there are limited places to stop for lunch apart from the various seven eleven shops.

Amazing that such expense for bicycle access to these bridges was given. We rented e-bikes which were Essential for old folks like us. They worked great and easy, reasonably priced rental (1600 yen for 6 hours, which is about all the battery will last.)
We rode about halfway and back as the e-bikes have to be returned to where they were rented. Awesome accommodation at the rental site, too. Reasonable and with a great view of the inland sea and bridge. Web site photos are what you see.

Cycled half of the Shimanami Kaidó today. Omonichi to Setoda. The bridges are stunning and the cycleway is easy to follow. The scenery is OK but a lot of industrial stuff as well as the citrus groves. It was also strangely dead. No cafes or bars were open along the way. (Apart from Dolce Gelateria - delicious ice cream) Sunset beach was deserted and empty save for half a dozen fellow cyclists. There must be a 'season' when things are open?

Renting from this place (also called Onomichi Port Bike rental on google) was very easy. We managed to get bikes without a reservation, despite the website showing all bikes as taken. It seemed most people didn't have reservations and got bikes ok (although this was about 7.30am so they might run out later in the day). Bikes were good quality and the English speaking guy at the counter helped us with the map showing us ice cream spots and where we can get the ferry back if we got tired. The cost was ¥2000 per bike per day and ¥1000 yen deposit. There's several lockers nearby to store bags if you need to, we used the train station one.

Four of us hired our bikes in Onomichi and took 2 days to cycle to Imabari across the 6 islands. It was a good thing we checked out the bike hire the day before starting our cycle as the standard of bikes was poor. There were very few bikes with gears, and most were in poor condition. We also wanted a carrier so we didn't have to wear our rucksacks, but then had to find a bike store that sold bungie cords to hold our bags in place as Shimanami Bike Rental didn't have any such thing.
We paid a deposit for the bikes and a rental charge, believing we'd get the deposit back when we returned the bikes in Imabari - but the deposit then became a one-way rental charge as it wasn't refunded.
That said, the 5-speed bikes we chose did perform well and we had no problems with them.
The cycle itself was a lot of fun and very scenic. There was one bit of the route on the second island that was smelly and rundown, but the blue route generally followed the coast of the islands.
We don't cycle very often as live in Central London, but we found the bridge approaches, and other gradients quite achievable.
We'd definitely recommend the trip, but be careful with Shimanami Bike Rental in Onomichi.

There are lots of bikes to choose from but all are fairly poorly serviced and no pumps or repair kits are available for hire. If the bike fails, which happened to us, they will come and get the bike (eventually) but they won’t get you.
We ended up with a pinch puncture and after getting a repair kit from a very helpful cafe owner discovered there were more patches than tube and the tube was so stretched it had had been folded to fit into the tyre. The cafe owner rang the hire place for us after realising there was no way we could get the bike back on the road.
There are other rental places around, pay a bit more and get something reliable.

We booked our bicycles one month in advance online and had no problems securing a reservation (this was in late November). We got decent new cross city bikes. Please check your bikes as some of the bikes can have problems with gears, seat adjustment etc. The staff at the Onomichi bike rental shop was helpful but did not speak much english. We were given some instructions to read and filled up some forms before we were off with our bikes. The bikes come with bicycle locks. Helmet rental is at a separate charge and is optional.
For hassle free cycling, we arranged for our hotel in Onomichi to forward our main luggage to our hotel in Matsuyama the next day using a 3rd party Takkyubin service provider. We carried a small day pack for our 1 overnight stay in Omishima. Please note that same day luggage delivery is possible only for selected accommodations within the cycling route.
Our itinerary was as follows
First day we visited Onomichi->Mukoujima->Innoshima->Ikuchijima (visit Kosanji temple museum)-> Omishima (overnight)
On the second day Visit Oyamamizumi shrine, ryokan dropped us off at Sakari Port for ferry ride to bunny island with bikes-> return to Omishima-> Hakata -> Oshima-> Imabari.
The route is easy to follow (just look for the blue lines) and the elevations are carefully managed. The ride is not technical at all but some physical conditioning is advised as the route is long (we clocked around 96km mileage with some other small detours or stops). For those who are not entirely comfortable cycling on the roads (especially when there is heavy traffic), there are additional paths parallel to the official cycling route in large stretches on which you can also cycle.
In terms of scenery, there is a mix of coastal views, soft industry and citrus orchards. There are restrooms, convenience stores, cafes/restaurants and/or rest stops interspersed along the route. I felt that 2 days was just about right for the trip. Any less and you will probably not be able to do any meaningful sightseeing.

We (family of 4) are planning on cycling from Onomichi to Imabari at the beginning of October over 2 days. Is there any advantage to reserving bikes ahead of time, or will it be better to go to Onomichi port early on the first day and choose our own?

We booked bikes a day ahead with Giant rental and we picked them up in the evening meaning we were good to go first thing in the morning. We found their bikes were in great condition and they actually adjusted the seats etc for us. At the port rental it’s a bit hit and miss and the bike maintenance is not good.

Hi, we're doing the the Shimanami Kaido from Ominichi to Imabari 2 days 1 night and I'm considering the Salt House for the overnight stay (eastern part of Hakata island). If we want to start early morning and take our time for some sight seeing on the first day, will we reach it before dark or is it too far? Thanks
Akira4961
Onomichi, Japan
Hi there, I think it is not so far, it is approx 50km. It takes 5 hours without break or so. You can reach there with 2 spot sightseeing. I recommend Kosanji-temple. Thanks.

Thanks for your detailed review Do you think it would be too cold to do this cycle ride in december?

It usually snows dec/ jan. Usually late dec. If it isnt snowing, would just depend on how comfortable you are cycling with layers + jacket + bag (and how heavy this will need to be with winter clothing).

Hello, we have about 40 non-reserved bikes at Onomichi port.
It is first-come-first-served basis. We are open at 7.
Thanks.
Hi, myself, my wife and two young children aged 0 and 2 are looking to ride the Shimanami Kaido in April. My question is related to bicycle hire, and what options are available for my children eg bike seats or a towable trailer. We are fairly experienced cyclists so are not too concerned with maintaining a decent speed whilst towing two children in a trailer if required. Thanks for your help
Hi there, please can I ask how this worked out? I am looking at the same thing with a two year old!

Can we rent a tricycle?
One of our party is disabled and loves cycling but can't balance on a 2 wheeler. She has a tricycle but it's in europe!
Does anyone know if any of the bike hire companies could rent a tricycle?

I did not see any tricycles in the public store. I would suggest getting in touch with the Giant store as they may be able to order in etc.

We are thinking to rent bikes from Shimanami Rental Bike. We like to drop them off in Imabari. Can you tell us the bus company(or companies) you came back with and did you have a reservation?
Also...is there a bus company you know of which will take bike and rider back to Onomichi? Thanks Margrit

Hi,
I'm afraid that we have no road bike.
Cross bike is available for rent, we have many 8 speeds bike.
Children's bike is also available, most of them is 7 speeds.
We can make a reservation from 6 months in advance.
For more information, please see our "Shimanami-Japan" web-sight.
Thank you.
