As I was descending from the summit of Mt. Senkoji, I noticed a three-story pagoda, a nationally designated important cultural property, so I decided to stop by. There was something odd about the fact that the main hall of the temple was not near the three-story pagoda. When Tennei-ji was founded in the Muromachi period, it was a large temple, but the temple grounds have now fallen into decline, and the precincts including the main hall and the three-story pagoda are now on separate premises. Also, the strange balance of the three stories of the three-story pagoda seems to be due to the fact that it was remodeled from a five-story pagoda to a three-story pagoda during the Edo period. You cannot enter the pagoda, but if you look inside through the gaps in the latticework, you can see a golden Buddha statue and brilliantly colored ceiling paintings.

Love the architecture of the temple. While it's not a "must see", if you're in town, it's worth adding to your itinerary.

We were looking for day trips out of Hiroshima and decided to give Onomichi a go. The place was nice but there are other interesting places to visit. Would recommend to go Iwakuni or spending an extra day in Miyajima. Many temples in one area but not that all impressive. Unless going in autumn or spring, then Onomichi might be worth visiting. Otherwise please pass.

A lovely area around the temple - the temple is worth the visit but don't miss the path of literature

Onomichi has a wonderful walking path through tight alleyways that cover some 25 Temples. This is just one of the many on the path and there are always fantastic views to capture along the way.

This is a temple that is part of the onomichi temple trail. There are two parts to the compound, the pagoda which is a very photogenic structure and is lighted after dusk, and the temple itself which lower on the slope. Compound are not big so you will likely move on quickly to the next temple after a few shots.

This little temple along the temple walk was the peak experience of my charming time in Hiroshima. Just as you are cresting the city this beautiful view of temple, city, water, and mountains washes over you and you can't help but be overjoyed.

Little shops surround it:) check them out as well!
