36,000 war prisoners were brought to Japan during the Second world war and there were 130 locations and Mukaishima prison camp was one of them. in November 1942, 100 British were brought from Indonesia and 23 died due to sickness etc. And in September 1944, 100 Americans from the Philippines and one died. On 8th of August , 1945, a B-29 bomber were shot down ,50 miles off Kyuushu and survived 10 were brought here. in September,1945 all the survivors wereliberated when the war was over. As I had chance to come to Onomichi, I took a ferry to the island (just few minutes less than a dollar). An elderly gentleman, asked the direction kindly took me to the place. I wanted to see the walls on which names of prisoners were written but the camp(used to be a textile weaving factory before the camp) was demolished few years ago and now a super market were there instead but I could see the monument plate stating as above instead. Just a meditation and prayers during the sight seeing would be good.

The east coast of Mukojima (Hishio area) has the most beautiful scenery. It's perfect for cycling! The east coast is off the Shimanami Kaido bicycle route, so you can enjoy nature and the local atmosphere. There are few cars on the road, so there are few artificial sounds and it's peaceful.
