Really great views out over Onomichi Port, Mukaishima, and the Geiyo islands. My friends and I took the ropeway up, and then walked down. It was well worth the effort!

Located half way along Senkoji mountain and not far from the cable car station. The temple was established around 806. The temple offers a panoramic view of Onomichi port and the Seto Inland sea. A must visit when you're in Onomichi.

Loved the vibe of the place. There was also a small cafeteria within the temple complex which is a good place to unwind.

Great walk down through temples and paths between traditional homes on the steep hillside. Beautiful natural rock features and stations presenting Haiku. A view across the islands, and inland sea toward Shikoku. You can take the cable car to the top if you don't want to work up too much of a sweat.

We visited in March 2019 during a cloudy/sunny day.

Senkoji temple is up the steep hill and you will need to either climb up or take the cable car up. We opted to climb up, which made for a fantastic experience. Along the way, there are a few stops where you get a nice view of Onomichi. On a sunny/cloudy day, the view is absolutely stunning.

I'm not sure how the view is like during spring and summer, as most of the trees are bare in March. The Senokiji park also has potential to be a beautiful spot for hanging out on a warmer weather in spring.

There is also an interesting gigantic chain hanging at the top, near the temple. I have been told that if you were to succeed in climbing up the chain, your wishes will be granted. We watched another local female attempt the climb, but it seemed pretty difficult and dangerous, so I would suggest caution when approaching the chain.

The space here is really large, so even though there are a lot of visitors it does not feel crowded. The views are outstanding - the straits and working boats below, bridges and islands in the distance. You can take a ropeway up, and there are two roads up the backside. I bicycled up, and it was steep, but manageable.

Onomichi is a small gem in the fukuyama region. We choose to base ourselves in Fukuyama and visited onomichi and tomonoura. There are more than 30 temples in the onomichi region. Senkoji is located on the mountain top. It can be access by foot (take temple route) which is approximately 1-2hrs where we pass by all the various temples n sights along the way up. Alternatively, you can take a cable car ride up. I would recommend walking up as the various sights and views are amazing.

If you make a day trip to Onomichi City and you have limited time in the city, you must climb Mount Senkoji and pay a visit to Senkoji Temple and the park on the way up.

Mount Senkoji overlooks the city. It is 144.2 metres high, and you can climb it from the Hondori (“Main Street”) Shopping Street, a short walk from Onomichi Station (NOT Shin-Onomichi Station). If you have knee problems or babies in tow, you might want to avoid this place; otherwise, it is great exercise and an enjoyable experience making the climb through narrow alleys and past pretty little houses.

The view from the top is amazing on a clear day. One of my photos tell it all.

Senkoji Temple is a Japanese Buddhist temple more than 1,200 years old. It literally hangs off the slopes of the hill. If you’re interested in Japanese religion, culture, and sculpture, you’d love the many statues spread all over the temple grounds, Jizo (Ksitigarbha in Sanskrit, Di Zang Wang in Chinese Buddhism) being the most prominent figure. There are shops there selling charms if you need any.

Heritage, culture, and great views - definitely worth your time and energy.

Senkoji temple area is a wonderful place with a beautiful temple and nice views over the islands in front of Onomichi from hills. We reached to the observation platform at the top of the hill by ropeway cable car. View from hills is very beautiful, we observed the town, sea area, some ships and a bridge (Shimanami Kaido) from the hills. In total, all of them made a magnificent view from hills (observation platform). There is a small monument called Lover's Sanctuary and art museum over there. We also met with a few quite cats on stairs down they are chilling out in the shadows. There are two ice cream shops at the top and the taste of ice cream was good. There were a lot of sightseeing spots in the park. I really enjoyed this temple area & park and highly recommended it to everyone visiting Onomichi.

Put on your snickers and be ready for some activity when you visit this place . It offers a good insight to Japanese faith and traditions . Go up using the rope and enjoy the great scenes from above . You can visit temples and buy a unique orange ice cream made only up there. Use the iron chains to climb and measure your hand against sumo players . And at last go down on foot and enjoy everything . If you love art, there is a nice museum on your way down . Being a cat lover is a plus as there is LOTs of cats there ... very peaceful Japanese cats .
