Legend goes as the devastating were worried upon knowing that ravanan has got the athmalingam from Lord shiva and they requested lord vinayagar to help them as he may gain more power. Lord vinayagar promised to solve the issue. While all were wondering what to do, ravanan landed here to do santhyavanthanam as its sunset time. To make use the opportunity vinayagar went near him as a small young boy pretending to be a casual by goer. On seeing the boy, ravanan requested the boy to hold the athmalingam in his hands till he returned back after finishing the santhyapujai,as placing it down is not possible as it will get installed in the place where it's placed and the boy told him that its too heavy for him to hold and so he has return upon his call otherwise he will place it down, but tricked ravanan by pretending to call him thrice and placed the lingam here. Ravanan ran back after his pujai to see the athmalingam placed down and tried to pull out but went vain and exclaimed hay maha bala. ,meaning of Lord you are so strong that I cannot pull out. And thus the temple here. The main deity is the athmalingam of Lord shiva worshipped as mahabaleswarar.Visited March 2022Travelled with familyWritten 9 May 2022
- Savithri S15 contributionsGood trip, but wish the public transport was better.During the second week of February we visited Muradeshwar, Gokarna etc. We hired a taxi from Muradeshwar to Gokarna. The taxi driver took us to an Eco beach, three other temples (two of which are part of the Atma lingam) and to the Gokarna beach. The Gokarna temple opens only at 5.30pm and there was a long queue to get in. The temple needs to be kept in better condition. One can buy good spices from here and some bargaining can be done.Visited February 2023Written 25 February 2023
- Venkateshbabu A8 contributionsGreat place with soulful experienceVisited the temple during Mid April. Feels divine as we enter the sanctum. The Atmalinga (broken) is enclosed, we are allowed to touch this during mornings. I tried, but could not get the actual feel, probably we the people would have dumped other offerings.Visited April 2022Written 25 April 2022

On 1st June'23, myself along with my parents & son got to visit Sri Mahabaleshwara temple at Gokarna from Sri Ramakrishna Mutt, Mangalore.
A 6 feet tall Shiva Linga here at the temple is known as the Atmalinga is worshipped here. Built using granite, it is a classical example of the beauty of Dravidian architecture. The temple has been mentioned in the Hindu Mythics of Mahabharata and Ramayana and it is said to be as significant as Kashi.
Dress code is strictly followed here, Men should not wear shirts & Women should wear traditional attire.
We had a good dharshan of Atmalingeswara & a blissful day at the temple.

We had a short 2 day trip from Hubli and this was our Third stop after Gayathri Tapobhoomi and Sirsi. The temple is very nice and it cannot be rated as it is the house for Atma Linga of Lord Shiva. You can find stories about how the temple came into existence.
From Hindu perspective, a must visit.

Mahabaleshwar Temple in Gokarna is one of the famous temples of South India and there is a good rich history behind it. I would recommend it to read before visiting the temple. Some of the interesting facts about the temple -
1. No Foreigners are allowed.
2. Men are allowed with lungi as attire (no jeans, pants or shorts) - It can be bought outside from markets in around 70 bucks.
3. Women are allowed with traditional Indian attires like saree.
Also lines can be huge on peak days (It took me 1.5 hours in the line on Saturday). There is a Maha Ganpati Temple nearby which can be visited alongside this temple.

This is the religious temple for which Gokarna was famous for until recently where tourism has developed a lot. You will read about what to see and stuff in other reviews too, so let me tell you something what other reviews are missing. Firstly, this place is located in narrow lanes so avoid taking cars here. Parking is slightly away (around 500 mtr) but there is no other option than to walk. Ensure you wear traditional Indian dhoti for mens and complete body covering dress for women. There are no changing rooms, so wear the clothes from your hotel before going. After coming out of the temple, do visit the Ganpati temple for a very unique idol of standing ganpati. It is at walking distance.

How can I go to gokarna and murudeswar temples from vijayawada?

Best would be to book a flight to Goa or Mangalore and then take a cab from there. Else you also have few trains which would take a days journey to reach Gokarna.
I am planning to go gokarna temple for my father's mokasha pooja,so what time I should reach there in morning. What time the formality starts. Is any booking for that.

If you want to have darshan .You neednt stay in accomodation. Just remember to time your journey before 1230 pm when the temple closes and opens at 1700 hrs. So pyour journey accordingly. Morning time is best time and after darshan you can avail of free food as prasad provided by the temple.

There are few hotels around. And in case you dont intend to stay back there and just want the room for keeping the luggage and using facilities for some time, then there are many small time lodges etc near the temple. Else, It depends whether you would stay at the Gokarna town or at Kudle or Om beach. If at town, Hotel Gokarna International is good and inexpensive. They also have Gokarna International beach resort at Kudle beach. You can also try the Patang beach hotel which generally is full unless booked in advance.
