What a fantastic highway this is, scenery beautiful. Driving thru in Novmeber, amongest all the greenery, purple foxgloves were covering the hills, looked spectacular.

This is not a drive you should worry about. It's an easy and beautiful drive. We did the side trip to Damper Falls and it was nice also. Not sure where all the hype about NZ roads comes from but I grew up in Colorado...More

We drove from the Stratford end. It was a rainy day but still the scenery was splendid! Took us three hours and it was worth every minute of it. Had the weather been nicer we would have done some more exploring but we can’t control...More

We travelled from Stratford as far as Whangamomona. The route gets a bit boring after a while as it in much the same all the way. There were good views from the sadddles such as Pohokura. I believe that the route and the views get...More

One for the drivers...lots of corners, narrow tunnels and one lane bridges. Lots of amazing views. Mostly bitumen but about 9k of dirt road. Every so often you can catch glimpses of the historic railway line which cuts an incredible path through the countryside. Plenty...More

We had heard from family that this was a must do drive. We took the advice and were definitely not disappointed. Very scenic with plenty of photo opportunities. Not to be rushed. Nice sealed road except for a 12km stretch which was a little bit...More

A winding road through the green hills - a nice drive indeed, however think hard if you do it with a trailer or a larger campervan. The tunnel just before Whangamomona is one narrow lane only and has a height restriction, too. Many sharp curves...More

This drive was definitely a highlight of our trip to NZ! Breathtaking scenery the whole way. Make sure you allow a whole day for this drive, it should not be rushed. We did a detour to Mt Damper Falls which was definitely worth it.

Very scenic drive along the "Forgotten World Highway", even after a night of heavy rain which made the drive more interesting. Just have to go a bit slower on the unsealed section of road.

The scenery is like nothing I'd seen before. Green pasture with mini-mountains just jutting up everywhere. Don't plan to go fast - though the locals who know the road are pretty quick, try and follow them when possible. Remember you are not going anywhere. Turn...More

Mostly, and the weather should be your decider over the gravel. The gravel when dry is pretty firm and even, or there are handy ruts. You are not going to be going fast so it should not be a major. All the scary bits have... More
