The idea of "reviewing" a place like this seems odd to me; MOM doesn't need my help, it is quite simply one of the wonders of the art world and a spiritual center of other worlds. Just take your time...often, you may even be alone...More

A working Monastery that also has its own award winning vineyard. St Benedict started his Order here, the history of their wine is 700 years old. Recommended.

It was off the normal path for us, but we took a long drive from Montipulciano, followed our map and discovered Monte Oliveto Maggiore, a monk’s retreat in the Tuscan Crete area. It was beautifully isolated in the middle of nowhere. It’s an early part...More

We visited the abbey, en route to Montalcino from Siena having consciously taken a longish detour through the Crete Senesi region. The parking is a fair distance away, so be prepared for quite abit of walking including some slopes, though it’s well worth the effort....More

We had the benefit of being here with a guide, but if you come on your own, find a suitable guidebook to help with the history of this place. The inlaid wood choir is so beautiful, it's hard to comprehend how they were created. Also...More

Lovely place to stop while in this area of Tuscany. The frescoes are magnificent. Since it is a working monastery, one gets a feeling for monastic life. There is a cellar, with knowledgeable staff, to taste and purchase the wines and olive oils produced there.

This is a beautiful abbey that is actually still in full function. We enjoyed wonderful inside stories about the abbots who live there (from very young to very old ones) from the friendly guy at the gift shop. I really enjoyed the architecture and rich...More

I believe our visit was on a Tuesday with Roberto. I remember the pickup was early morning, perhaps 8 or so? It was part of a full day of touring.
