The building is impressive right on the riverfront in nice surroundings of countryside. Extremely impressive front and even more flamboyant intérieur. The whole is covered with baroque style plasterwork.

It is a beautiful hall church, divided into three parts and tapers towards the apse. The decoration of the sacred room is characterized by exuberant rococo splendor.
The cycle of paintings by Gottfried Bernhardt Göz, Mariologically determined and aligned with the image of Mary at the main altar, three ceiling frescoes, ten watches and a great organ are the specialities of this church built by architect Peter Thumb between 1742-1750.

I’ve seen many churches in Germany and I can recommend this stop. Also a great overlook on Bodensee.

We were staying nearby and decided to visit Birnau as it looked so impressive from the cycle path.
When cycling up and coming from Ueberlingen I would recommend cycling past Schloss Maurach and turning left shortly after because that way you avoid the gravel track that is hard to cycle on.
I had looked at their website before visiting and they mention guided tours of the building once a week (seemed to be on Thursdays around 15.00). The timing was ideal for us as it was in the middle of a heatwave and the church is actually quite cool inside. When it came to the guded tour, we were the only people there so it was a personal tour! Our guide was a very knowledgable member of the congregation with a real passion and interest in catholic saints. This meant that we learnt far more than we would have done if we had just wandered around by ourselves.
The whole tour lasted just under an hour and was completely free although you are encouraged to leave a donation on the way out.
As mentioned by other reviewers, there is also a little kiosk on the site which offers a shady place to sit with a cold drink. In addition there is a church shop (air-conditioned) which offers some nice little gift items (both secular and religious).
Overall, this makes for a lovely stop, particularly when the weather is hot.

Never in my life have I seen such a Church. So ornate, beautiful, peaceful and sumptuous. Not only that but it sits in surroundings of vineyards and lakes. Utterly breathtaking

Bathed in pinks, whites and gold, the Rococo architecture is truly heavenly. Think of a concert of angels as you view the paintings and statuary and especially take note of the famous "honey gourmet/licker" angel.

Take a seat in a pew and enjoy the peace, serenity and beauty of this magnificent work of art and place of worship
