About
History |Galleries | Cafes | Boutique shops Central Otago's best kept secret - a free visitor attraction that has something for the whole family. When the Clyde dam was completed in 1990, Cromwell's main street disappeared under Lake Dunstan. Some of the historic buildings dating back to the gold rush of the 1860's were saved or lovingly rebuilt on higher ground, creating the Cromwell Heritage Precinct. Step back in time to the gold rush and explore heritage buildings, many with artisan businesses in them, located on the shore of beautiful Lake Dunstan. Open daily.

Nice to see the heritage buildings that have been saved following the dam build and flooding as Lake Dunstan rose. They have been carefully placed in a precinct and their history explained. Various shops operate out of them including food and drink and clothing etc. Also there is the Victoria Arms Hotel a few steps further on to supply a cold beverage when required. The whole area is definitely worth checking out - our accommodation was only 10 minutes stroll away and we spent a fair few hours looking around.

We stopped here before doing the cycle trail and had a beautiful breakfast and coffee. Best bacon and egg sandwich in the freshest bread ever.

Not sure how many people know this is here but take a side trip off the highway and explore this stunningly well preserved historical precinct. There several maps erected around the area guiding you through the area. Allow at least 30-60 minutes to have a good explore and see the various buildings of which nearly all are open and many of which have information about the use.

We accidentally came across the historic precinct and to our delight, we were charmed by the lovingly restored buildings, lake vista, galleries, shops and local businesses that called this home.

Easy access to walk the lower and upper precinct, well sign posted and presented.

Highly recommended to visit!
