The views were amazing. You can walk to five different beaches at low tide. There is so much room and shade from the rocks and cliffs.

The small town of Alvor is lucky to call two very different beaches its own. There is, of course, the main beach, vast Praia de Alvor, some 2 miles (3.2km) long and particularly amazing when the tide is out. Then there is the magical Praia dos Tres Irmaos which probably measures around 680 feet (200 metres) long when the tide is out.

To access it, one must scramble precariously through and over the jagged rocks at the eastern end of the main beach. Some people may find this quite challenging, such as young children, the infirm or those lacking natural balance. I witnessed one young lady in real trouble, and you don’t want to fall on those rocks with their sharp edges and rough surface. There is alternative access (up past the entrance to Sol e Sombra restaurant) via a well-worn path ending in some rough steps less than 10 minutes’ walk along the cliffs and through a privately owned holiday village (Prainha), just east of here. However, here, too, it would be challenging to bring pushchairs, sun loungers or parasols down onto the beach.

Those that do manage to visit this beach will be rewarded with the most scenic succession of small coves, little caves, undercuts, much-photographed rock formations, beautifully soft sand and pristine-looking water. Remember you’re on the Atlantic coast and waves here can be high and powerful, and when the tide comes in, it comes in quickly, so, study the tide table and don’t get caught in the coves furthest away from your exit when the water washes in.

Surprisingly, and almost in a Pirates of the Caribbean-way, someone has dared wedge a small restaurant (Canico) into the cliff face and although I wasn’t in it, I would imagine the view from its terrace is bound to be spectacular.

Talking of cliffs, obviously, there is a certain danger of rockfall from above, but the famous Algarve sandstone here is full of fossils and quartz, and it’s easy to study the stone’s composition due to erosion to the cliff face. Looking down on the beach from above presents opportunities for some fabulous photographs but please be aware the cliffs are not fenced and are often undercut, so don’t venture out too far for that perfect shot, or you might become a big, nasty splat on the rocks below.

Despite this, highly recommended!

Gorgeous beach. Here in November and SUNY and 68 degrees. Not many people on the beach. Surf is rough-not for swimming- but fun to watch.

Large beach area upon arrival, also large parking.
But the 'Tres Irmaos' are not the beach where you arrive on, you need to take an extra walk to your left, and then discover the beach.

Beautiful area past the main beach at Alvor. A couple of beach restaurants, which offer great local, fresh food. Best accessed when tide is out. At the time of writing this there was a huge amount of seaweed, massive piles which had built up and were quite pungent but do not let that put you off from a visit. Great photo opportunities.

The beaches are beautiful and the surroundings are incredibly nice. Water us cold but very refreshing. You can get chairs and umbrellas quick and inexpensive.

We just stumbled upon this area as we decided to check out the beach. Our Uber driver told us about the caves and since it was low tide we were able to do that walk!
