If there is anything that Cala Gonone is known for it is the water, the beaches and it's many caves. Limestone is a predominant rock that makes up the landascape and with erosion, water and natural earth movements, comes the birth of these natural formations. It does not take long to see the place. It is better to just drive up there than fo with a tour company as it comes out very reasonable in prices which comes down to 8 euros. Dont forget to visit the nearby restaurant and enjoy their offereings

We experienced a ca. 45min tour (offered each hour) through the cave. You are going down a metal and concrete stairs and can already see the absolutely impressive cave. The guide gave some interesting information about the formation. Definitely a must go!

Enormous cave hidden right inside the mountain with the tallest stalagmite/stalactite in Europe. Inside there are 500 steps to negotiate but secure walkways with a double hand-rail are provided. I enjoyed it far more than Neptune's Cave near Alghero. That was so crowded and cramped. There were only 8 people on our tour here. The cave is well lit and a spectacular sight. You have to climb up the steps from the car park to get to the entrance but it is well worth it.

Well, to tell the truth, we accidently bumped on this attraction, since we simply were driving around the area, looking into the map). However, this place is bit hidden, so you have to pass some steps towards it up and then there is a waiting area, where tourists wait for opening. In fact, it is necessary that cave had some rest from tourists, therefore there are visiting hours. However, we did not have to wait for too long, only about 15-20 minutes.
Additionally, there is an ample parking area and a restaurant near it.
Anyway, the whole cave is quite interesting and worth visiting, especially if you are fond of caves), as it is wide, deep and has gorgeous nature sculptures inside. By the way, now I know where from some fantasy cartoons have their “broccoli” trees)). Together with that, do not forget to wear something on, as the temperature is about 17C.
I recommend this place to all visitors, kids are also welcome).

Wasn't the first time I went there but this time I brought my partner to see it too.
This cave is absolutely incredible, that middle pillar, it just takes tour breath away.
The excursions start on time and the guides all speak both Italian and English.
The tickets also give you access to the Museum in nearby Dorgali which gives you an interesting insight on life in a cave.

This is a very impressive cave. You walk down around 50 m, overlooking the big cavern. There are several huge stalagmites in the middle. The tour (starting every hour) takes about an hour and our guide was very nice.

How often does one think about what's inside a mountain! Now we have an idea.
The guided (also in English) tour leaves every hour and lasts about 30-45 min. Faint hearted and people afraid of heights - it takes some minutes to get adjusted. Doable with 2 small kids (mine are 3 and 5), but it is a bit of a climbing up and down the stairs.

The cave (only one is visited) is actually a vast cavern, and the visit involves first climbing a load of stairs to the entrance, then - once inside - climbing down 50 metres of steps and then all the way back up again, so it's not an easy visit for anyone scared of heights, vastly overweight or exceptionally tall (unless you wear a hard hat). Photography is not allowed.
There are no surprises here: upon entering you see pretty much the whole thing straight away. There are no fancy coloured lights or sound effects (as in some touristy caves), and there is no gimmicky switching lights off and on again.
The guides were very knowledgeable, though the presentation was mostly given in Italian; the following English version was about 1/2 as long, but they were happy to answer any questions and took their time. They also make sure you don't take pictures and make it back up safely. They leave it up to you to spot interesting features and formations and do not point out any wildlife in the cave.
There is a handy café/hotel with a nice terrace at the foot of the steps, by the car park, ideal for coffee and ice cream before or after (tours go roughly once an hour, so you may have to wait).
After visiting, carry on down to the excellent, isolated beach at the end of the road the cave is on, or check out the tiny dolmen nearby (a 10-15 minute walk from the sign).

If you are in the region, it is worth visiting. Moreover, there are not many things to do on the island apart from visiting beaches. Visits: every hour.

Approximately how many steps to get to the entrance, and how many to descend/ascend into and out of the cave?
