When we finally came to this place we've already been to several religious places.I thought I will feel the same serene feeling but I was wrong.This place has some kind of mystery, I can feel the presence of St.Padre Pio everywhere.He's real and existent during our whole tour within His convent.I got to know St.Padre Pio up close and more personal through his clothes,vestments,letters,confessional booth,furnitures, works,etc.When we got in to that mosaic church where St.Padre Pio was buried,it was really a jaw dropping experience.The mosaic walls are beautiful,really a work of art.The surrounding is so serene even though there's a lot of pilgrims getting in the church,there's still a sense of peacefulness and serenity.One needs to experience this feeling themselves so they can understand what I meant.From this experience I became a St.Padre Pio believer and fan.Visit this place and I hope you'll feel the same awesome experience.

The church of Saint Pio was designed by the architect Renzo Piano. The Lower Church contains the relics of Padre Pio and was decorated with mosaics depicting the life of St. Francis on one wall and the life of St. Pio on the other together with the corridor leading to it by Fr. Marco I. Rupnik.
The “lower” church and corridor leading to it were decorated with mosaics depicting the life of St. Francis on one wall and the life of St. Pio on the other.
The “lower” church interior contains mosaics portraying episodes in Jesus’ life. Behind the altar is a sarcophagus made of light wood and silver, protected in a container, where St. Pio’s mortal remains are. Pilgrims line up to touch St. Pio’s sarcophagus and pray .
The Upper Church features a glass window measuring 700 square meters opening out into the square and can take in 6,500 and is made up of arches of marble held together by steel cables, radiating from the wedge-shaped altar. A bronze cross and the stone altar were designed by sculptor Arnado Pomodoro.

Highly recommend! So beautiful! The church and former home of Saint Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, a very beloved Catholic priest and Saint.
So much to see, reflect, and pray about...this "Convento Santa Maria delle Grazie" is made up of 3-4 buildings:
1) Friary where Saint Padre Pio lived;
2) Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace (older church where he celebrated Mass; attached to friary);
3) Basilica of Our Lady of Grace (newer church; attached to older church building); and
4) Church of St Padre Pio (newest/largest church in much larger building within walking distance from Our Lady of Grace Sanctuary).
We traveled there from Rome by train and were on the church grounds for about 5 hours...wish we would've stayed longer! This is the church were Saint Padre Pio of Pietrelcina celebrated Mass during most of his life. He died in his room which is in the friary/building connected to the church. I highly encourage everyone visit the Pilgrim Office to request a guided tour of all the grounds.
For those of you who don't know who Padre Pio is, he was a friar, priest, mystic, and stigmatist who received the 5 wounds of Jesus Christ on his body for the last 50 years of his life, and was canonized as a Catholic Saint by Pope John Paul II in 2002.
Many people went to visit him for Confession, because he had the gift of reading souls (he could see a person's sins). He also had the ability to bilocate, to communicate with angels and had all the gifts of the Holy Spirit. From his 50 years of suffering with the 5 wounds of Christ (stigmata) and many physical assaults from the devil, he was able to share in Jesus' Christ's redemptive sufferings which helped save countless souls from damnation (based on what is written in Colossians 1:24 "Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church").
Both his room (also known as his cell) in the friary and his confessional are preserved for public viewing. His partially incorrupt body is in the church next door (Church of St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina) inside a clear casket in the lower church area.

The church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, probably beautiful but it was not possible to visit it, since at the entrance there was a lady who did not allow entry because they were saying mass, I might have wanted to listen to mass but I was not allowed . Inadmissible. The churches must gather all the sheep that have not been removed. Furthermore, a number of people were asking for money in front of the church and in the surrounding areas

Padre Pio has been called the most important Italian of the 20th century, and that would take some doing. He has inspired the country, popes, his followers and contributors. Look no further than the number of hostelries and monuments dedicated to him throughout Italy. The enormous hospital adjacent is the beneficiary of his good works. He is worth encountering on a temporal level. Now for the spiritual. Stigmata is a powerful concept and despite self conscious prattling cannot be explained away by Freudian interpretations. He seemed to have spiritual knowledge of the way of the world and meaning of events. Finally, very holy people who came to meet him, came away convinced he was a saint. Experience this place, his shoes, his crucifix, the bloody linen from his wounds with an open mind and heart. You will be rewarded.

Time to stop, reflect and pray. If you are a devotee of St.Pio, you can relive his life and his charisma. If you do not believe ...it may not be the place to go

Walking through the aisles of the convent, seeing all the artifacts of Padre Pio's old cell, his confessional box, the letters from his spiritual children, the old choir loft where he used to go, gave me a good feeling. Even with the crowd around, I could still feel his presence in the place.

We visited the Shrine of Padro Pia in San Giovanni in Rotondo in October. We took the public bus from Foggia about an hour's ride from the city. Pretty neat ride especially as you near the town of San Giovanni Rotondo going up the twisting roads to the top.
We were surprised when we arrived at all the souvenir/tourist shops. The street that you walk up to top of the hill to the Shrine is lined with them. We toured the cathedral, climbed the stairs to the top of the hill that contains the stations of the cross and visited the new church which was very beautiful. Every way you turn are donation boxes, hundreds of them. We thought there would be more information and history on Padro Pia himself. We couldn't find any public tours available of the shrine though we did see many private tour groups.
When we were in Caserta we did visit the birthplace of Padro Pia, Pietrelcina and that was far more informative of his life and his works.

Is there somewhere safe where we can leave our luggages for few hours? Were coming from Foggia station apparently they don't have left luggage facilities. Any replies would be much appreciated. TIA

Hi there, unfortunately I don't know of any such facilities in the area. You can try with the Gran Paradiso Hotel, just at the foot of the hill where the Basilica is. They might do it for you for a fee.
