Mines and coal undergrounds

A must see in the region. Historically and culturally important in the "Ruhr" area, this remaining coal mine has to be visited once (and the surrounding attractions).

This is an old, quite superficial mine. You can walk right in, and should definitely take the guided tour. Don't miss the giant steam engine. There's a fair exhibition about mining at this spot. The site can be reached by Ruhrtalbahn, and is within walking distance (about 25 minutes) from Burguine Hardenstein.

Wonderful place!!!! it's a big green park, where you can just to have some jogging, or a little walk or just to go with your girlfriend in the panorama terrace or the tower to have a romantic susnet on the ruhr river =)

The museum is very informative - and together with Muttental - presents the very start of the coal mining in Ruhr gebiet. I like to have my lunch at the small tent-like restaurant outside.

This open air museum is on the site of an 18th century coal mine, which was filled in and became a brickworks in the 19th century. This in turn was closed and became a junk yard in the 29th century. All signs are in German and English, so all information on the history of mining and brickworking in the area... More

This was a great place to visit, though parking was a bit tight in front of the museum. The staff were helpful (especially when I shut my finger in the car door and needed directions to get to the hospital!) The coalmine visit was great, but not for the claustrophobic. Lots t osee round the site to help give you... More

A guide in typical coal miners gear greeted the children with a loud "Glück auf!". Afterwards they were kitted out in the same way and went into the mine. There was real coal to mine and they did so while smearing themselves with coal dust (they were invited to do so). Then they tried to build a fire with the... More
