The main beach is nice and the view is also really awesome.
We walk on the rocks instead of walking on the road.
I would advise to do the same (just be careful as this can be really slippery).
Overall this was nice but not exceptionnal. Maybe this is due to the fact that the weather was grey/rainy. I might change my mind on a sunny day.

I loved this beach. The black sand, the warm water, the rocks in the sea, the arid view and the stunning landscape make Mosteiros a must-see when visiting São Miguel. I became a fan and will definitely be back.

Nice village on the west coast, worth the visit. The piscinas are on the North side of the village and are really nice. There are many, some of which are deep allowing to jump from the rocks. Not many parking spaces, so avoid weekend days. We were there a weekday with no sun and had a couple of piscinas only for us.

It took me an hour by bus to Mosteiros from Ponta Delgada. The road was not as winding going to Furnas. Sky was partially covered, but I was still happy not raining as the other day. After wondering along the beach, kind of rocky, mainly was volcanic formation. Wave was pounding against the shore but not windy at all. Local people were fishing along the coast line and at the pier. I happened talked to a local, he spoke fluent English, it was total surprise as he said he had been working in US for last 50 years no wonder why. Anyway, he said English was second language in Portugal.

Mosteiros Beach was my target for long exposure photography of the black basalt sea stacks. The black sand beach was not crowded that day in June. Wonderful.

Mosteiros has a decent sized black sand beach ,separate to the bathing rock pools and rocky coves on the other side of the village quay. Nice setting, with simple bar and refreshment areas, well priced. Nice swimming area, guarded in the highs season, with a view out to the rocky islets / stacks that mark out Mosteiros.
All you need for a relaxing evening on the sand, no pretensions, just locals and visitors taking in the unfussy vibe. Recommended.

A great beach... rocky with lovely rock pools. Great walk leads you along the length of the beach for 30 mins or so. Walk the locals snorkelling for limpets.

Mosteiros, which is 'Monastery' in Portuguese, is a lovely, windy place located in the NW corner of San Miguel. The black sand beach and the gorgeous islets of statue-like lava rock, just off shore, are famous attractions. Combined with beautiful scenic views and natural sea-side swimming pools, a visit to this approx. 570 year old fishing village is well worth the side trip off the main highway that circumnavigates San Miguel.

Beach with parking right next to it. Black sand like all the beaches on the island. The sea is calmer than in the rest of the beaches that I visited

Not much more to say. It is a beach which most prominent feature is the black sand and the cliffs.
Since this is in the middle of the atlantic, expect big waves and rip currents. Also, the beach might be sandy and you would think the same is the case in the water - but it isn’t... 5 meters out there is nothing but big rocks, so take care when going out into the swell.

Hi,
My family and I are going to São Miguel in June for ten days. We are staying in Mosteiros and rented a car. What should we bring on vacation? Anything special we need? Do you have any recommendations for the week? Is there an atm in Mosteiros?
I appreciate the advice:-) we have a seven year old boy:-)

We didn't see a bank in Mosteiros when we were there, it's little more than a village - best to go on to a web map and do a search. It's not a long drive to Ponta Delgada (but a very beautiful drive though Sete Citades) if you have to return there for bank facilities. The city is easy to drive around, but very 'tight' for space - you'll need to breath in and hold your elbows close around the older parts! As we were there in March, we dressed accordingly - lightly, but with waterproofs tucked in our backpacks - we got slightly sunburned! Do a web search for June average temperature/rainfall and pack to suit what it shows. We used 'Windy' for 5 to 6 day forecasts - it's very accurate. The sea water pools in the volcanic rock headland are amazing, but only if the Atlantic is calm. When there's a sea swell the waves really beat in. There's a kiosk there, which should be open daily by the time you get there; Sunset - Poco da Pedra Bar. The best Cheese and Ham toastie and delicious black tea (ask for milk). We had one of each, just 7Eu the lot! In the right conditions the sunsets are - as you Americans say - awesome. With a car available just get a good map 'do' the island - it's only a relatively small island after all. We put well over 400 miles on our car in 6 days. Furnas is a bit of a drive from Mosteiros, but is a village with volcanic fumaroles in it - amazing and has the smell of hell - there's a lake nearby and also a 'pond' you can swim in - heated by upwelling heated water. A drive up to one of the Miradouros (viewpoints) is worth it for the view back into the volcanic caldera, several miles across - you see the lake and village far below. We bought a Bradt tour guide before we went, it gave us several pointers on where to go. If you go to Ponta Delgada for a look-see and you want to eat very well and cheaply, find 'Lan's' little restaurant - it's super and well regarded. Enjoy your trip - the Azorean Portuguese are lovely people and very friendly.
