So many caves dug into the hillside and so many beautiful Buddhas within. A piece of history and an architectural dream created into reality

We have so many must see things on our list but this is different and really worth a few hours. We were followed or maybe escorted by the monkeys. There has been no refurb. and it is very interesting

We found this site amazing and quite different from other places that we visited in Myanmar. We took a day to travel from Mandalay and Bagan. This was the highlight of that day, but the other stops were great and together made for a great, unforgettable day.
The site itself is in terrible disrepair. Many statues are crumbling and you find ancient Buddha parts lying in piles. The caves are small and some are still fabulously decorated. Many have intricate entrances carved out of the stone cliff around, giving it the feeling of a mini-Buddhist Petra. Since there are no other tourists, you feel like you are still discovering parts and things that other Westerners may never have noticed. The combo of rough and unvisited made the site feel a lot more adventurous than other places.
For the trip from Mandalay to Bagan, we visited the 1000 budddhas, the giant Buddhas of Bodhi Tataung, and Thanboddhay Paya for the day. Each site was WELL worth the time and extra distance required to get there.

This is yet another must-see stop during your visit to the Monywa area. It is a unique place to visit but then again, we thought that every place we saw in Myanmar was unique and worth visiting. So I highly recommend and hour or two spent wandering around here!

So glad we came here, these caves are unique and beautiful. Kaing Mar was our guide and she was so lovely and genuine with good English, ask for her when you arrive. The paintings in the caves are very intricate and there are so many Buddha statues. The monkeys were polite and we even got to feed them.
A one off experience with an insight into 14th century Myanmar

If you want to see the place - hurry. The temples and caves are in such bad state of maintenance that without urgent intervention of conservation specialists they do not have much future. And they are really worth a visit despite difficult access on a narrow and bumpy sideroad the works of art compensate for the effort...

A hidden place which deserves to be part of your itinerary where paintings from the XVI century have been kept in great conditions. When we visited being the only international tourists was very enjoyable.
Quiet a few debris here and there when we went so hopefully they will watch out for waste pollution to prevent the deterioration of the site.

We shared our journey with the lovely Khaing mar leaving in the near by village. Khaing mar has planned very soon to join a monastery but in case she has not, she will be more than happy to share the story of this site with you in English as well as day to day life routine in her village next door including traditions. She was very welcoming and friendly with us and showed us around a few treasures in a large site where you could get lost.

Her mobile 09779988532. Thank you again

We came to Monywa just to see these caves and they did not disappoint. We were the only foreigners there and there were a couple of locals. Every person we saw was so friendly and we didn’t see anyone begging. The monkeys were around but didn’t bother us. This place should be a UNESCO heritage site and I think it will one day. It was neat to see it before it gets too crowded. It was fun to explore without signs, handrails, rules, etc. I do wish they would do more to protect and preserve the site though.
We took a great tuk tuk driver to the site who has been recommended previously. mr.htike144@gmail.com was his email address. The day wouldn’t have been the same without him. He showed us around some of the caves and spoke really good English. He had a new tuk tuk as well. He showed us great hospitality!! Thanks again.
