Another spectacular pagoda, we are losing count now! This one has some half a million Buddhas of all sizes squeezed into every possible space imaginable. Quite awe inspiring when you think about it! Wonderful colours as well.

An absolute must for visitors travelling through central Burma. We went by river from Bagan to Pakkoku and then overland to Monywa. Thanboddhay is a short drive from Monywa - the temple complex was built between 1939 and 1952 and served as a shelter for thousands of Burmese refugees during World War II.

There are many buildings in the complex, but the main one is a riot of colourful painted stucco and gold. It's decorated in quite a naive way, but the size of it is quite breathtaking, and the interior is also stunning - columns carved with literally hundreds of thousands of tiny Buddha figures, among which are giant Buddha figures which reach the roof. (There is a small fee to view the interior of the pagoda, but the exterior is free). Allegedly, the total number of Buddhas in this complex is 582,357 ...

It would take a very long time to view all the details of this pagoda - there are many figures looking out of alcoves, climbing up towers, etc. - and at the entrance two enormous white elephants guard the gate; further in some large stucco tigers are shown climbing over another gate ... It's a good place to people-watch - lots of local characters - and we were lucky enough to see a wedding across the street as we arrived.

Thoroughly enjoyed it, as well as the nearby Bodhi Ta Htaung with its giant standing and reclining Buddhas and its collection of more than five thousand smaller Buddha figures.

This is an absolutely stunning monument. It is so beautiful that it leaves you speechless . And it is not only the main temple, the other buildings around it are wonderful too. And on top of that there is a viewing tower which you can climb at no extra charge and that gives you a magnificent overview of the whole site. Do climb it if you are male !! For some reason women are not allowed to climb it, which is unusual in Burma. But this is the only restriction for ladies, who will still love the place with its over 500000 Buddha images and a unique mixture of elegance and colourfulness. And then, just a few minutes away, there is the second highest statue in the world: the impressing 116 metres tall Bodhthiataung Buddha. Also not to miss!!

There could be no more elaborate a place than this amazing pagoda. Just when you think you must have seen IT ALL - there is more! This is a must see even if only to feel your jaw drop in awe.

This is yet another amazing and unique pagoda to visit if your travels in Myanmar take you near Monywa. Don't miss it if you are in the area. I would say to allow about 1/2 hour to one hour to see everything and take photos. It is truly a beautiful place!

We visited it on our way from Mandalay to Monywa and we're glad we stopped and visited this pagoda, despite many local visitors we were the only foreign tourists, an amazing pagoda covered in buddhas of all sizes throughout, our children had a lot of attention and many pictures taken which can become tiresome but you go with the flow,

This is apparently quite modern and recently constructed and its claim to fame are the hundreds of thousands of Buddha statues. They are all sizes and they are everywhere in every nook and in every cranny even all the way up tall towers. For this bizarre assortment it is, I suppose, worth a visit if you are passing.
