Having journeyed over 2500 kms from North India, my family and I were filled with anticipation as we approached the Omkareshwara Temple in Coorg. The temple, nestled in the scenic beauty of Coorg, held the promise of a spiritual haven, a place to find peace and seek blessings. Unfortunately, our experience was far from it.
Upon arrival, heavy rain blurred our vision, and in the absence of clear signage or guidance, we inadvertently climbed the temple stairs with our shoes on, thinking there might be a designated area to leave them further up. This genuine oversight was met, not with understanding, but with harsh rebuke. The temple staff, including individuals who seemed to hold senior positions, confronted us aggressively. Their loud, berating tones echoed off the temple walls, turning a place of worship into a scene of distress.
My elderly parents, always embodiments of patience and respect, tried to explain and remedy the situation. Yet, the temple staff continued their confrontational approach, showing no empathy or attempt to understand our perspective. We mentioned the language barrier and our unfamiliarity with certain customs, but it fell on deaf ears. They not only denied us the chance to pay our respects but also made us feel unwelcome and humiliated.
In reflection, while my family and I hold deep respect for all cultural and religious traditions, the encounter at Omkareshwara Temple left a painful mark. It’s my sincere hope that no other visitor experiences such treatment, especially in a place meant to symbolize peace, understanding, and spirituality. I urge the temple authorities to better train their staff and ensure that all visitors are treated with the dignity they deserve.

This temple is right in the heart of Madikeri city. Its very peaceful and has a nice lake. You can just sit, do nothing and still enjoy the peace around.
Although not a must visit, I would still recommend a visit to this place if you have some time in your itinerary

Board outside said only full clothing allowed.
Hence we couldn't visit inside.
Boys who could go were scolded by priests for coming in with belts on. There were no proper instructions written.
Pond with fish was good!
Temple wasn't very magnanimous anyway.

The way to the temple is a bit difficult to find and there was close to no person in the temple premises when we visited. The temple complex has a lake and is beautiful to look at. The shivling is kept very far away and there is a priest available for puja.

Serene, holy complex, built on Indo-Islamic Architecture. Lord Shiva is the presiding deity, worshiped here. Another temple in the middle of the sacred pond outside the main temple. It's not a regular tourist spot but a religious place of of worship, hence sanctity needs to be maintained. Dress Code followed ( No Shorts / Short Tops / Skirts / Sleeveless etc ) .

A very nice and big temple in the heart of madikeri. It has a beautiful pond and there are around 3-4 gates for entry. The wall painting and the structure of the temple are very beautiful.

One of the interesting temples which I had ever seen.
It is a mix of Gothic and Islamic style. As the name itself signifies Lord shiva is worshipped here.
The establishment of this temple dates back to 19th century. This temple was built by the then king Lingaraja(also known as Lingarajendra). The temple is constructed surrounding a lake which gives a pleasant view to the devotees.
The story behind the construction of this temple is that the king Lingaraja desired the hand of a brahmin girl. Since her father, a poor brahmin refused to give her away in marriage to the king, the king killed the brahmin. By doing so, he was cursed with "Brahma hatya dosha". After this he used to get scary nightmares. Later, he was advised to build Lord Shiva temple to get salvation from his sin. Hence, he constructed Omkareshwara Temple. It is believed that, the Lord Shiva which is installed here was brought from Kashi and also, a very sacred one among the five Shivalingas worshipped in Kashi.

The Shiv temple stands out because of its architecture which is built as a mosque with four minarets. Nothing much to look around but a must visit because of its unique architecture.
Photography inside the temple is not allowed.

The first thing that hits you when you visit this temple, in the heart of Madikeri is the cleanliness which personifies all the temples in Coorg including Talacauvery. A serene temple at that
Apart from that the temple is built with minarets and has a large dome, similar to the Mughal architecture
Apart from that, within the vicinity is a pond with ducks wading at the entrance of the temple and no shops selling touristy stuff or anything outside the temple.

Walking in from the crowded town-hall area, this temple is a wonderful quick getaway! Barely 100-200 metres away from town-centre, this temple is well-constructed, neatly maintained and bearing a feel of great tranquility. It is wonderful to visit the place, sit and relax, meditate, and step out rejuvenated! Highly recommended!
