No there are translators in the school but it's way better for the supermarkets and MuPing if you have a basic understanding of Chinese. Use the app 'Pleco' to increase your vocabulary. I used Pimsleur Mandarin 1 and Pleco combination. I was able to converse with a lot of Chinese shop owners and ask for certain fruits and where other shops were.
