See there are 2 ways to travel to Qabala. The new road is fast and better but there are multiple small hidden gems across old road. It is under construction but I think in a year it would be fantastic to go around that route. One such gem on this route is this old historic mosque. Not a must visit but if you are on this route why not stop by, take a glance of history and some pictures before you move on.

Big mosque pretty much in the middle of nothing, a nice stop when on route from Baku to Sheki. As usual, women can only access part of the mosque, go in from a separate entrance and need to wear a head scarf, cover legs/arms. The madrasah is, as far as I could see, nothing special (a simple room situated by the main entrance, no art features).

this is probably one one of the main attractions at Shamakhi. women enter from left, men enter from right, through the central entrance.

In between Baku and Sheki there's not a lot to see, so tourists stop at the Juma Mosque. It is a brand new mosque with a lot of emotional and historical background ; first build during the early stages of Arab conquest in 743, it collapsed during subsequent earthquakes. More importantly (in light of the current political situation), Armenian nationalists destroyed it in 1918. Ilham Aliyev ordered it rebuilt to make a point . . .
The mosque itself is not remarkable, but it is worth the stop if only to better understand the geopolitics of this region.

This is an interesting mosque that has been extended in the front. The original metal spires are on display in the garden.

Coming from UAE, where we have the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, visiting the Juma mosque brought back memories, goes without saying the vibes are peaceful, and the architecture is incredible.

I visited Juma Mosque on my way to Qabala. It is the oldest mosque in Azerbaijan and over the years has been sympathetically restored. The visitor now gets to experience its architecture and craftsmanship in all its glory.
It was very quiet when I visited. I felt I had the entire place to myself. At the entrance gates there is a security post and a basket of headscarves for visitors to borrow if required. Understandably any visitor is required to be dressed appropriately before entry.
I did need a headscarf to cover my hair, and I then entered the female area of the mosque to look inside.
It is beautiful. The decor is very ornate and very impressive.
The grounds are also beautifully kept.
The whole place felt very peaceful.
In my opinion, definitely worthy of a visit.

Much restored mosque, but now fully open and nice inside. Very historical mosque, well worth a stop on the way to Sheki
