Visited via a princess cruise. Despite being a working port , it’s still beautiful.. the surrounds are gorgeous and the sail in and out so peaceful

Big timber port and you get the smell of newly felled trees as you enter. Not unpleasant. Entry port for Christchurch New Zealand.

This is a working harbour! Cruise ships are now entering as the stopoff for Christchurch. The dock staff are friendly and efficient guiding you where you are able to walk to get up to the village, which is very quaint

It is like any working harbor you can see anywhere in the world. If you get up to the Timeball station you can get a good view of the harbor and Quail Island. Not much going on while we were there but loading of a couple ships...

The geology of this area is amazing this harbour was actually a crater of a volcano. Very interesting, once you walk higher up you can see it.

Just a short drive around the headland from Lyttelton town proper, there is a really great look out over the harbor. This was a bustling hive of activity with the Hamburg Sud ship, the Rio Madeira in port and being loaded / unloaded. It was cool to watch. There was a coal terminal down the other end as well. Its always fascinating to see stuff like this going on. I could of stayed longer, except it was cold and the wife was freezing out of the car. Have a look if you are driving past.

Even though we visited on a wet day, it was lovely to see the harbour full of ships and lots of activity.
