First of all I thought I was going to die on our way up because the "road" was all muddy and narrow, and there is nothing to avoid your car to fall from the cliff, I never saw such a dangerous road to access to a ski field. The ski area is very small and boring. The staff was nice... More

We came here with two small children - our 5 year old was going to have her first day on skis. Unfortunately very windy and it was hard for her, but the staff were brilliant and very helpful and flexible. The lodge was warm and comfortable and we'd consider spending a few days here in the future.

Took a drive up the (scary) road to this ski field. Didn't ski but looked to be a fun place to do so. Probably more aimed at intermediate skiers - worth the drive even if just to play in the snow..

Thanks for the kind words - just to point out though, all alpine roads in NZ are difficult! Club fields certainly cannot afford tar seal. No campervans are allowed up road and chains must always be carried. our new beginners tow for 2012 was a huge success and helped all the learners find their feet. More

Great instructors. Had a terrific time skiing & snowboarding. Staff were very helpful & friendly - good equipment available. Our only grudge was the tow cable to take you back up to the top - very hard to hold onto & quite taxing on the energy. Best part was the skiing down the slope!

Thanks for the kind comments - not sure if you went to Mt Lyford or Hanmer? Both fields have a "nutcracker rope tow" which does take a little while to get used to. Our Poma tow at Hanmer is the longest Poma tow in NZ at over 800m! More

We came here with our children. We are not skiiers but this place had everything on offer. If you want a non commercial club type setting this is SOOOO for you. There were great areas for the kids to play around in and if you are a skiier there are certainly enough slopes to keep you busy!. I wish I... More

Thanks for the review - we have taken on board and plan to provide more food and refreshments next season 2013. Being a club field we never have queues! More

Had a gorgeous weekend re-union, 3 of us "old girls" from 35 years ago in the Army. Just blobbed in the Hanmer Springs Hot Pools, wandered around the village- excellent restaurants and shops. The snow around the village added to the atmosphere. A weekend to remember.

We took a day trip from Hanmer and took the winding road up the valley to the ski area. Note - you do need snow chains to attempt the very steep terrain and some of the turns towards the top of the pass are very hairy, not for the faint hearted. we weren't equipped for skiing being day trippers so... Thank you for your comments - just a couple of points to clarify - the road is like all alpine roads in NZ, as such it does require chains for safety reasons. It really is no more scary to drive than Mt Hutt. Our terrain is mainly for intermediate & advanced however we are installing a brand new beginners tow... More

Been doing the club fields in Canterbury for years - nothing like it in the world. Best kept secret is Hanmer - long poma, really good terrain, and friendliest day lodge anywhere. Top it off, at the end of the day have a soak in the Hanmer hot pools. Good pubs and cafs too
