Absolutely amazing to look at from a distance, but hugely uncomfortable both as a beach and for swimming.

The pebbles make sunbathing a real ordeal (there are no facilities available so you just have to place your towel on the pebbles and then try and lie on it - if you manage to find a spot, that is, because that place is packed with people like sardines in a can).

Also it's very painful to actually walk into the water and because the sea is shallow for quite a distance, it's pure torture for your feet till you finally get to the point where it's deep enough for you to be able to swim.

I did it once, just for the record, but it sure was my last. I ended up with a few bruises.

This is the rocky beach that appears in all the captivating photos of Polignano, and its most popular landmark. We spent some time seated by the rocks, the water was slightly cold to swim. Don't also miss the wonderful viewpoints on either side of the cove, and from the bridge itself.

Definitely the Polignano, and even Puglia landmark and one of the most photographed spots.
Lama Monachile beach is set in a rocky sea inlet, surrounded with high cliffs with houses perched on top. The best views of it are just from that cliffs (several view points) and from the bridge opposite the cliffs.
However, have in mind the beach is highly popular and in high season is packed with people. There are no facilities down there - sunbeds, restrooms, drinks,...
While the scenery looks spectacular from above, I had no desire to go down to cool myself despite the scorching heat.
Instead, I went to the other side from the high cliffs (beneath the singer Domenico Modugno monument) where're the low cliffs with very few people from where you can jump and swim up to the beach.

this place is overhyped online and was extremely disappointing. the views and scenery are beautiful but that’s about it. it’s way to crowded on the beach and in the sea. everyone was on top of eachother and there was rubbish in the water. really wanted to like this beach because i’ve heard such amazing things but very disappointed. maybe we went on the wrong day who knows

Th water is very refreshing and the beach is not too crowded if you go and leave before noon. There's plenty of shade at that time in late August. And although the beach is very crowded, there's a really nice atmosphere. Be sure to have some rubber shoes or flip flops with which you can enter the sea because the pebbles are very big and slippery!

Overcrowded. This place is really beautiful. But there are always a looot of people. It's hard to find a place to lie down. It's also not really comfortable because of stones. If you decide to visit this beach take a soft blanket and shoes.

This is just one of the most beautiful views in Europe. Lovely cliff top buildings, gorgeous sea & people littered on the beach. Great view from the town of PaM. Nice restaurants located here too.

we thought Alberobello with its charming Trulli was fabulous...until we decided to drive to the coast. Only 30 minutes away was the most striking cliff drop into the most azure blue sea...I have ever seen. Polignano a mare had a lot of vista and a lot of culture....a highlight of our recent trip to Italy

The view of this cute little beach is fabulous from the bridge that crosses the ravine in Polignano a Mare! We managed to find the stairs leading to it and to walk right to the edge of the Adriatic sea. It is the romantic beach depicted in the biopic "Volare - La grande Storia di Domenico Modugno", the beach where Franca and Mimmo swam.

It was the end of October when we were there, so it was too cold for us to swim. We do not know how it is there in the summer.

Beautiful water, fantastic mass of humanity all being very Italian, lots of young girls striking selfie poses, dogs being bathed very much against their will, body con men, older ladies, all enjoying very close up and personal beach going. Getting into the water a major challenge given the slippery stones on the beach and into the sea ... reef shoes a very good option here ... and the path to the beach is via the remnants of Emperor Trajan’s road and arched bridge, built around 108 AD... good fun all round.
