- GoPlaces13543403780Dublin, Ireland1 contributionWOW - Marine ParadiseWow, what an amazing trip. The skipper, Derek, and his son Ethan, were the perfect guides - so knowledgeable and great fun. I still can't believe all the marine wildlife we encountered - seals, dolphins, minke whales. It was a real experience and the kids were amazed. So much bird life on the Skelligs and Derek kept us all up to speed with all the different types as well as the complete history of the islands. Seeing gannets diving into the water where Minke whales were feeding was a sight to behold. It was like being in a David Attenborough wildlife documentary!!! Highly recommended and great value if you fancy a day out on the atlantic ocean. The kids will certainly be talking about if for years to come. Thanks 😊Thank you for the great review and for taking time out to do so. You really had an adventurous trip and seeing so much wildlife would certainly make it a special trip. Derek and Ethan alway do a great job and are very knowledgeable about all aspects of marine life in the area. They are also well up on the history of the Skelligs. - Kim S3 contributionsAmazing hosts, breathtaking scenery! This trip was nothing short of fantastic and breath-taking (quite literally but that's my asthmas fault, not the crews!). Our crew was amazing in getting us there, educating us on the area around us, some history lessons, making us feel comfortable, and encouraging us along the way! They were amazing and so awesome to deal with. Very friendly and kind; pure hospitality! Would DEFINITELY recommend this team if you plan to visit Skellig Michael!Hi Kim, Thank you so much for your fantastic review! 😊 We're thrilled to hear that you had a breathtaking experience with us, despite the challenges. Your kind words about our crew mean a lot to us — we take great pride in ensuring our guests have a memorable journey, imparting what local knowledge and history we have, hoping to immerse the traveller in it so they can relate to the place. - JoãoPorto, Portugal3 contributionsPerfect day!Skellig Michael is a place of beauty. From the 1 hour boat trip, to the mesmerizing views on top of Skellig, with Puffins by your side, it's so worth it. If you're a Star Wars fan specially, getting to visit "Ach-To", from Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, adds even more to the experience. Be aware of the walk. You have to be extremely careful with the steps (built more than 1000 years ago my monks) and if you have vertigo I don't advise the climb. Shout-out to the boat crew, who were incredibly nice and thoughtful with the entire group all morning. This is one tour to remember for life.Thank you so much for your wonderful review of Skellig Michael! We're thrilled to hear that you found the experience beautiful and memorable. The boat trip, the incredible views, and the charming puffins make the journey truly special. It's fantastic that you enjoyed the connection to Star Wars, as visiting “Ach-To” can indeed make the adventure even more magical for fans. We appreciate your advice regarding the steps. The ancient paths, while historically fascinating, do require careful navigation, especially for those who might be sensitive to heights. Your words of caution will surely help future visitors prepare for their journey. Our crew will be delighted to hear your kind shout-out! They strive to make every tour comfortable and enjoyable, and it's wonderful to know that their efforts made a positive impact on your visit. Thank you for choosing to explore Skellig Michael with us at Skelligs Rock Cruises. "Fair wind and following sea" for all your future travels. - Sarah ZCharleston, West Virginia4 contributionsCoolest Experience in Ireland! We were lucky and got to land on Micheal Skellig! The trip out there & the island itself felt like a once and a lifetime experience. It was by far my favorite part of our 10 day trip around Ireland. The crew that took us was great. It was an exhilarating trip but we felt like we were in capable hands. Loved the member of the crew that was pointing out dolphins & landmarks as we raced along! It was an amazing day!Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 1 August 2024

A must do if you are in Ireland! Seanie and Derek from Skellig Rock certainly made the trip memorable, making sure all 12 of us in the boat were well taken care of.
We also chanced upon birds feeding in the sea, and boy, what an experience! We soon realised there was a school of dolphins hanging around, along with a couple of minke whales showing off.. we are right in the midst of a marine feeding frenzy which lasted a good 30 minutes!
The 2 Skellig Michael Islands were also spectacular, and we were lucky to see the whole colony of gannets circling the island, before the winter migration.
All of these wildlefe would not have been possible without the acute sharpness of Seanie/Derek!

Climbing Skellig Michael was phenomenal - definitely one of the highlights of Ireland. Skipper Derek and Seanie both gave great narration of the landmarks and wildlife on the boat ride over and made sure everyone was doing OK with the sea travel - two of the friendliest blokes you'll meet. Highly recommend booking with these guys, they made sure it was a great day!

We had an amazing experience with our captain & crew from start to finish. Great weather and wonderful travel companions on the boat. Seanie Murphy provided so much history and information about Skellig Michael, Portmagee, the wildlife (both air & water wildlife). Our captain had a great eye for dolphins, puffins resting on the water and the best views all the way around the island. We cannot say enough great things about this crew and the experience they offer that is unlike any other you will have! Thanks from Lisa & Dorsey in Texas!

Derek and Seanie are very knowledgeable so you not only go to Skellig Michael but you also get a history lesson on Little Skellig, Valentia Island and the surrounding areas. They also search out wildlife - grey seals, gannets, etc. The very best thing though is how well they took care of everyone. When we docked, Seanie decided to hike the steps up to the top, for some exercise, but on his way up, he noticed a girl that was struggling in her descent, and he hurried up to her, and then he walked her all the way back down, just to turn back around and start his ascent again. The entire time with a smile on his face. I also get motion sickness and had taken tablets before the ride over (which was pretty smooth) and then again before our trip back (which was not at all smooth). Both Derek and Seanie kept checking on me multiple times throughout both trips, to ensure that I was ok and to give me tips on getting through them. They provided rain gear or fisherman’s gear (jackets & pants) to everyone who was exposed, for the wet ride back (it was not raining but the waves were rough) and then let people have a turn at steering the boat for a photo op. Well worth the cost and I would do it again in a heartbeat. The guy who won’t leave someone stranded on the steps is the guy I’m giving my money to hands down.

First rate service, very accommodating host and the onboard crew made it all easy. Booking process was easy too, would have no hesitation in recommending. The actual visit was an experience and I'm very glad I got to go. Dress appropriately and listen to the safety briefing and you'll be grand

Derek and Mike with Skellig Rock Cruises went out of their way to ensure we had a great boat trip out to Skellig Michael. Highly recommend. And Seanie and Mary were excellent in keeping us informed on the weather and the status of the tour pre-trip.

Seanie and Derek are fantastic everything about Sea Quest is superb !. I will always travel with them and can’t recommend them highly enough !. They are true professionals with a very human face (a very rare quality these days). It is clear from the moment that you meet them that they are at one with the unique environment that they inhabit, their love for it is truly infectious and will make you want to return to this very special place. If you are fortunate enough to have the chance to travel with them I would strongly urge you to seize it you won’t be disappointed !.

Unreal! Incredible! Why did I not do this before now? Feel as if I died and went to heaven!
Seanie & Derek (plus Seanie's daughter Shauna!) were excellent guides, made people feel at ease on the boat & made sure that everybody was safe & comfortable.

Hi Sandra, I am headed out there to Skellig Michael in mid-April of next year, and wonder if any of the operators will let you onto the island a little earlier than the posted season if you get there early and the weather is workable. What was your impression? How would I be able to get the best chance at that?? Thanks!!
Written 18 June 2018
I would say pretty definitively no. The season is determined by the Office of Public Works (part Irish governing body) which takes it out of the individual sea captain’s and boating company’s hands.

Does anyone know which boat tour operators to Skelligs Rock have a washroom on their boat? I get seasick, so I want to make sure I have a boat with a washroom just in case :P Thanks so much in advance!

Hi JennLax22, John O'Shea from Caherdaniel has a washroom on his boat. He goes from Caherdaniel and Portmagee.
