Definitely not as impressive as in summer but I still would recommend as there are no crowds and the weather sheds a different perspective. The fountains in front of the palace were covered but you can still get a sense of the size and grandeur of the place. Just to sit and take in the vista is worth the visit.

This is one of the biggest and most beautiful parks I’ve seen in my life. It was so pleasant to stroll and run (yes, I was a child at the time) across it. Fun fact: there’s a big statue of a Dachshund dog (one of my fav breeds)

Nicely shaded with some sunny areas as well, this is a great place to walk and relax. There are benches placed throughout; it's very peaceful and doesn't seem crowded even though there were plenty of folks there.
You can take a carriage ride through or simply stroll along the many paths. Lots of birds singing their lilting tunes.

You can reach it by boat from Prien in 15 minutes. (Tip! Go early, then it is not so crowded)
Approx. 20 minutes walk to the castle with a wonderful garden, spectacular fountains and water features and a magnificent view of the Bavarian mountains. The castle can be visited (it was too much work for us at the time). There is a small self-service café next door. For the quick option on Herreninsel you should plan a good hour.

The guy really let it rip back then. If you don't have to empty your own pockets but instead plunder the state treasury, then you can make such expenditures. All in all, a great thing for today and for the tourists. It would be a shame if we couldn't experience that today.

This castle with a park that is surrounding is something amazing, a castle is very nice, lots of gold haha, in the park you can find horses and ducks so children will be satisfied also, transfer from shore to the island where the castle is located is very fast and not expensive, just to warn you in December it is very cold, -8 in the afternoon.

Unfortunately uncompleted palace. It was great to have a tour or discover how great the old building and artists. Highly recommend.

I was expecting more of Herrenchiemsee Palace. The entrance price of Euro 9 isn't really justified for a short tour of the palace. Only a couple of rooms were completed during King Ludwig’s time. As astonishing as they are, other palaces I've visited made a bigger impression.
The island though is beautiful to explore and I enjoyed walking around.

We stopped here on our way from Salzburg to Munich and really enjoyed ourselves. If you have a car, the parking area in Prien (am Chiemsee) is directly across from the ferry departure point and cost 6 euros cash paid to an attendant. The cost of the ferry itself depends on whether you're going only to Herrenchiemsee itself, or whether you also want to visit other stops on the lake (Chiemsee). We chose simply the visit to Herrenchiemsee, and the cost was 114 euros for our group of 11. The ride took 10 or 15 minutes, and you can buy drinks and snacks on board. Once at the island, you can buy tickets to visit the palace, or you can visit the grounds for free with no tickets required. (It is not possible to view the palace without a tour.) We bought tickets for the palace, which cost 110 euros for our group of 11. They will assign you to the next English-speaking tour if you want, but we were in a bit of a hurry, and so we chose a sooner German-speaking tour and were then given an English translation paper telling a little bit about each room we visited. For our purposes, that was perfect - but if you have the time, I'm sure the English tour would give even more information than we got on the paper. The interior of the palace was fabulous, and so the tour was well worth it. There is a cloakroom right next to the tour starting point, which is free but does require 2 euros - coins only - in order to get a key. No photographs are allowed inside. When visiting the grounds outside, the mosquitos/bugs were terrible around sunset time. After visiting the palace and grounds, make sure to get on the correct ferry to return to Prien. (If you are not arriving by car but by train, my understanding is that the train station is a little ways away from the harbor, and so you can either walk or take a little mini-train/shuttle to get to the harbor.)
