Swan Street, once an ugly industrial backstreet, is now full of stylish restaurants and retailers. Even low-budget KFC looks like something out of an interior design textbook. It's not all modernized; some of the grimy old Richmond pubs are stuck in their ways, but most bars have moved with the times. As for style, Maserati has a sparkling showroom that stocks Italian supercars, affordable only by the super-rich. If Maserati doesn't match your budget, try the Number 70 tram, or Richmond or East Richmond railway stations. I've been going down Swan Street for 20 years, and the change has been remarkable.

Location, location, location. Richmond is just outside Melbourne, easily accessible via train, tram and Uber---so close, yet still has that laid-back charm. There are many pubs, cafes, small shops, nooks and crannies to explore here. One can start breakfast with the locals at the pastry shops. Later in the day, enjoy Happy Hour. Or have Parma-Geddon for $14 on Wednesday nights. The neighborhood feels like it's in the cusp of change.

Spent a couple of nights in a Cremorne apartment 200 meters from Swan St precinct. The area has a divers range of restaurants, cafes and bars all within 500 meters. It is close to Melbourne's famous sporting precinct and short journey via public transport to CBD.

Swan Street is to the south of Richmond. It is a strip shopping street, full of restaurants, cafes, and dress shops. Like other strip shopping areas, it is not controlled by a central landlord. If a shop is hot, it's hot, if it's not, it goes out of business and someone new takes over the lease.Swan Street is never static. You can take the number 70 tram down Swan Street of take any train that stops at Richmond Station. You can walk to Church Street, it will take around 20 minutes..

I’ve lived in Richmond for 5 years now and I feel like this place has deteriorated over that time. Testament perhaps that on a Friday night the joint is half empty and the uncaring staff stand behind the bar looking bored.

Apart from the decor now appearing dated and grubby, my main gripe would be the bar staff - The staff were so rude to us it was upsetting. I appreciate you’re in your mid-30s and are barely making minimum wage serving drinks for a living, and that failure must be difficult to live with on a daily basis, but have some professional etiquette. Rude. Arrogant. Unprofessional.

I’m be voting with my feet and will never return.

Swan Street is a major thoroughfare running through Richmond, an inner city Melbourne suburb. The Number 70 tram runs from outside Flinders Street Station down Swan Street. Swan Street is now full of food and commerce. Once Richmond was once known as Struggletown, but now you are more likely to find a lawyer in Swan Street than a labourer. Swan Street has certainly come up in the world It's got lots of food and shops. I took the tram through Swan Street today, the street changes every time I go through it. That is the beauty of shopping strips: if it works, great, if it doesn't, try something else.

This street is filled with places to eat, from high end establishments to funky coffee shops, of which there are many, not surprising because of the Australian coffee culture. Richmond is a fun district, and at each Swan Street café where we stopped, people were really friendly and seemed very happy to be there. It's nice to see people enjoying their workplaces.

We were in Richmond a week ago staying not far from Swan street so decided to have a wander around after breakfast. Although it is not the most modern trendy part of town it is worth a visit. There are plenty of reasonably priced cafes for breakfast or lunch. There is a great little cake shop for a treat to take home. The patisserie is fabulous just go and have a coffee and take in the display cabinet. There are a few fashion outlets to browse around. The second hand book shop has free WiFi and good coffee and food. Walk down towards Church street and there us a lot of development happening with a brand new supermarket nearly finished. You can walk back to the city or catch the frequent trams. It is just a little different from the high end of town with a bit of history. Enjoy.

This is where all interstaters come to shop and they usually leave armed with bags of bargains. Most Melburnians stay clear.
