We are from the U.S. & only know a few words, numbers, & phrases in Spanish. We drove our rental car from Ayampe to Playa Los Frailes, Machalillia. About a 30 minute drive. They asked for our passports & asked our age (in Spanish, of...More

Choose a sunny day, get up early and do the hike! You'll come by beautiful beaches, where snorkeling is also an absolut must and the crowds of tourists are far gone.

Access to the main beach is very easy, and the beach itself is gorgeous. As others have pointed out, you should rent sun umbrellas (4 dollars each, two for 6 dollars), and the waves can be too strong for little ones. Our 8-years-old girl didn't...More

We didn’t do the hike in as it was very hot but the beach is beautiful with a long expanse of white sand. There were lots of waves and breakers the day we visited, so the snorkeling wasn’t too good. We used a taxi from...More

The trail gets you to Playa la Tortuguita, La prieta and finally los Frailes. They are all worth the walk. The beach is well preserved as it is part of the Machalilla National Park. If you want to go to Guayaquil from Los Frailes, the...More

The hike to Playa de los Frailes is definitively worth an afternoon or morning. The round trip takes about two hours. You will be able to visit 3 beaches, of which Los Frailes is the largest one, and walk along a few miradores with stunning...More

A beautiful beach. The care and protection of the area is also commendable. The water is wonderful and recommend taking a little path to the Mirador. One of the most wonderful places ever.

This is hands down the best beach in mainland Ecuador, only some Beaches in Galápagos will rival Frailes. For small children the breaking waves maybe a bit to much. There are parasols for 4 $ at the entrance, get one!

Stopped at Los Frailes during its regular hours on a Monday but was told it was closed for maintenance. Luckily we were staying close by and returned the next day since it came highly recommended. The beach was clean and not crowded at all. The...More

You will maybe see a few birds but you will need to go to Isla de la Plata to see the blue footed boobies, as well as red footed and nasca boobies and frigate birds. The snorkeling is so-so at Los Frailes. You will see more... More
