Very nice museum and an excellent example of science communication. Should visitors be interested in the geology of the island, I would recommend to people to visit it early on their trip so that they can recognise the rocks and formations they see later on. Otherwise, the uses of the mined materials is a very interesting topic in the modern world.

I visited with my daughter expecting a tiny disorganized place called a museum. I was way off. The museum is decent size (you need 1.5 hrs) that is very well organized and has some nice collections. Great for kids. It also has a very good movie that shows the locals who worked in the mines of Milos. Very interesting overall.

Small museum in adamas but really exiting with biutifull stones and rocks. Recomended ! We enjoyed the visit

What a wonderful little museum that provides a detailed history of mining and the lives of it's workers. Here, you will learn about geology and mining. The collection of rocks, stones and crystals is impressive and beautiful.

Mining was a very important economic activity in the island of Milos. Different types of clay, exported in France for construction activities, were extracted from caves. People, men, women even children were working there before World War II and till 50's. Videos and daily working tools, exposed very comprehensively at the Museum, show how difficult the situation was , but also express a feeling of satisfaction through work. Sentiments are controversial, awe and respect for the past...

i visited the mining museum in Milos in June, 2008 and paid 3 Euro to visit 3 floors-I learned so much about the geology of the island of Milos and along with the boat trip around the island the previous day it all came together as a wonderful experience. The museum tells all about the history of mining to the present day on Milos and there is a short but emotional movie telling first hand commentaries by former workers in the mines and about their lives. I loved this museum-it is very modern and the top floor has samples of all (and there is a huge number) the minerals on the island. It would be a great family experience and I will return again whenever I get back to Milos.
Also, in the tiny sales area on the main floor, you can buy small polished rocks and get ties for rocks with holes for necklaces for 3 Euros-these have made great, easily packable gifts for my family and friends as they take up little space in my luggage and are light-beautiful stones in multi colors.

Very good explanations on the cards in greek and english. Go here to learn more about the geology and stone age of Milos. I'm not very interested in geology, but it was well displayed, they have beautiful stones and you understand more of the island in the end.

Even if you want to soak up all the sun, go to the museum to learn about the Geology of Milos, and its history in a modern museum. Very interesting and well presented.

The Mining Museum is located in Adamas, the island’s main port. People who are interested in the rich geological and mining history, as well as the current mining acitivity of Milos, should visit this beautiful museum. The ground floor represents a collection of authentic tools and clothing of the past, other interesting artifacts, pictures and information about the volcanic activity on Milos. On the first floor, a beautiful and large collection of minerals and obsidian is presented in window-cases. Detailed explanation and photo’s give the visitor a good idea about the current mining activity. In the basement, a documentary film tells the story about the hard labour of the miners in the past. There is also a nice small museum shop with jewels, minerals and books. A visit of this museum is a wonderful experience and I never get tired of it because I always learn something new about the island. A busstop is nearby and the museum is accessible for people in a wheel-chair. Check their website on opening hours. A must see!

Milos Mining museum is located about a ten minute walk from Adamas centre. It is a small museum only open from 10:00 to 14:00. Admission is €5.
Despite the small size it tells you what drove the Melian economy before tourism became a mainstay. The museum talks about the lives of the miners and touches on the geology of Milos and what can be found on the island.
The museum takes about an hour to properly cover it and is on three levels along with a small gift store. Worth the time to go out there.
