Nice hike but you have to be prepared and in shape, I'm 67. During rainy season I expect this to be very slippery. I'd probably bring a stick. Pitty there are no marks and you easily take the wrong path. Panama should do better for its tourists!

This hike provides a beautiful view of El Valle when you reach its summit. Not recommended for beginning hikers or people without sturdy boots. A local teenage girl hiking in sneakers seriously hurt her ankle and was carried off the trail in a stretcher. But if you mind the rocky trail and take your time, this is an experience that you will treasure.

On Sundays during the Panamanian holiday season (late February) you will meet many locals as well as tourists climbing up the mountain. Locals sell refreshments along the way on the weekends, but it is crucial that you pack at least a liter of water. You will need it. The trail passes a waterfall and near the start some ancient petroglyphs.

I have included here a view from the top. The Sleeping Indian is only seen in profile from the valley. On the hike, you are, in effect, climbing to her. Do not expect to “see” the Indian at the summit.

Fabulous walk. It took a lot longer with young children (10 &7) than the advertised hour. It was difficult in parts, especially the descent, but was worth it. The view from the top is lovely and we saw a toucan.

We had a lovely swim in one of the pools.

I'd recommend you take a photo of the map at the start as it's not always clear which way to go and it was helpful to check up on how far we still had to go.

Really enjoyable hike. Starting from the official entrance we paid our $3 and unguided gently went up the steep and marked path. Going early we saw lots of birds and butterflies on the way, and the views at the top are stunning.

Once at the top you can either come back the same way, or continue down the face and body of the Sleeping Indian (coming down her neck is very steep !) and there are numbered concrete guide posts. At number 12 if you turn left down a well defined trail it brings you back to the town making a really enjoyable loop.

Excellent hike and at age 77 and wife 78 we had no problems going up it’s always harder coming down - our 6 & 12 years old granddaughters were going up and coming back to check on us but it was well worth the effort as we are experienced
hikers. Recommend older people using hiking poles.Local people and especially policeman very friendly and helpful.Intend doing again but a different route later this month. They both had a dip in the waterfall on way down.

We came on a Saturday morning first thing before the day got too hot. There was an admission charge of $3 per person. Trail was straight forward to follow. Look for the numbered concrete marker. We followed Google maps to the trailhead from town.

We took this hike with Juan from Manakin adventures, who picked us up from our hotel. Not only were the views spectacular, but the added bonus of seeing a Sloth and numerous birds which Juan pointed out as we trekked up and down that mountain really added to the value of the hike. The 1.5 hour car trip from Panama City to the base of the mountain enabled us to learn much about the country of Panama and it's wildlife from Juan. Great exercise opportunity and we highly recommend this adventure.
