I drove this road from Oudtshroon to Montagu . Many beautiful passes and views. There are plenty of safe turn offs to take some pictures and enjoy the views

This drive is undoubtedly one of the best drives with views constant.
We drove up from Ashton, through the pass to Montagu, and have transversed R62, through to Oudtshoorn before and this is a true fantastic scenic drive.
From Ashton the road has still not been completed due to road maintenance companies going bust, so with roadworks in place at two places there maybe a short wait at times because this is single file.

This area covers the main walking (as in hill). in Montagu. footpaths are marked well in some cases but not others, this needs better management but overall after you have paid entrance fee you will have a long memorable day for all that..

If you´re going from Cape Town to Port Elisabeth and want to avoid the traffic and trucks on the garden route, this is even more spectecular landscape!

Route 62 is a much more scenic option from Oudtshoorn to Cape Town or the other way. The landscape changes all the time and you pass through interesting towns such as Barrydale (we stayed there 2 nights) with it's famous roadside cafes (Ronnies Sex Shop/Diesel & Creme). There were a number of veld fires burning away on some of the hilltops as we drove along and clouds of smoke were drifting around the valleys. The Ashton/Montague section of road is being rebuilt so allow additional journey time of around 15mins to navigate the road works due to contra flows/speed restrictions. On the Paarl/Worcester section of N1 you can either take the toll tunnel or the longer (approx 10km) drive over Du Toits Kloof pass which personally I would recommend if you have the time.

The R62 is a great road to drive. Round every corner is another quirky sign advertising somewhere to eat or drink. Worth stopping to take photos! And the scenery is good too.

The Little or Klein Karoo provides a wonderful contrast to the coast, with wonderful mountain backdrops, farmland and vineyards.

For the uninitiated the best route across the Cape is perhaps not so much the garden route as the Klein Karoo. We were fortunate in that we went to PE via the Garden Route then following local advice bordering on insistence - lol - we returned to Cape Town via the Klein Karoo and what a beautiful trip it was augmenting fantastically well as it did the garden route journey - but without as much traffic. We saw a lioness croaa the road during the day about 200m ahead of us - awe inspiring.

The Route 62 is a must and Prince Albert is a lovely town with friendly community and lovely food at Karoo Kombuis for dinner. The breakfast at Country Store is excellent. The Waterfall in Meiringspoort is a must between the historic Mountain range of the Swartberg. At Barrydale, just at end of town is delicious belgium milkshakes.
