Great ride. Don't be foolish about the km seems short??. It is a bumpy rocky ride across various terrain. If wet quite difficult we would think. Dry condition as we had nice but still quite difficult in places. We enjoyed it...take water . Level of fitness needed as some places the cycle up across rocks and tree roots.. challenging.

We hired dual suspension bikes and got a shuttle ticket from Ohakune to Horopito from TCB who were just fantastic to deal with. I was a novice mountain biker but honestly thoroughly enjoyed the whole trip back to Ohakune! The scenery and landmarks are so varied there was never a dull moment. 10/10 would do it again!!

This is definitely one for al to enjoy, especially now that e-bikes allow those with a different level of fitness to also enjoy. This ride has everything, and is topped with well explained history boards along the way. The track is ideal for biking, running and walking, with Ohakune the town at road end with its variety of food and drink to enjoy. Hugely recommend Kune Shuttles to get you there for this excellent and achievable adventure

We got a shuttle to Horopito and biked to Ohakune. It is very hilly with a good track but it is incredibly rough pretty much the whole way with tree roots, rocks and cobbles jutting out of the ground. Lovely scenic route but I would rather walk it than bike it. The tunnel and Hapuawhenua viaduct are pretty amazing sights.

We walked from the car park to the viaducts- did not bike. Good easy walk with nice views of 2 viaducts on New Zealand’s main trunk line - old and new.

Not a lot of the walk is shaded, most is in the open. Informative signs along the way.

One suggestion:
When you reach the point where the straight path goes inside the tunnel and the right turn goes to viaducts, take the right turn. You cannot exit from the tunnel to the other side.

This was a really fun ride. The forest was beautiful and the viaducts were spectacular. While not a long or difficult ride, it was quite rough due to the cobbled surface of the old road and we were pleased we had full suspension ebikes, rented from TCB.

Enjoyed a Fun 2 hour bike trail. Old CoachRoad highlight would be Hapuawhenua viaduct (new and old). Take more photos at this old bridge.

Taking my bike offroad from Horopito to Ohakune. Cycling through the forest, and over cobblestone path was liberating.

We elected to ride the old coach road from Ohakune to Horopito and back some 35 kms and we hired e bikes from SLR Mountain Bikes. The SLR team were fantastic and the bikes were excellent.

We are in our 60's and have ebikes at home and have done rides like the Otago Rail Trail. Our son and his partner are in their 30's and they came with us

We were heard the ride was "Easy" ... Grade 1 to 2 ... Hmm not in our opinion ...

NZ bike trails are graded as follows;

Grade 1 Easiest; ... Suitable for novices ... off road trails are smooth ... wide for side by side riding

Grade 2 Easy; ... Suitable for beginners ... trails are wide and smooth ... predictable ... no nasty surprises

Grade 3; Intermediate ... Suitable for regular experienced cyclists with good fitness ... Off road can be narrow with steep hills ... trails are firm may include loose sections and obstacles

Grade 4 Advanced ... Suitable for fit experienced cyclists with good off road skills ... rocks tree routes loose sections and some walking may be required ...

While the trail start is an old road it rapidly changes to a steep cobbled road which requires careful negotiation and this morphs into some very tight very narrow climbs with loose stone and tree routes ...

The ride is lovely and the bush great and yes there are definitely some easy places ... An old tunnel to walk into and an old viaduct to ride over ... There are great info places detailing the history and the track is clear to follow ...

But it is rough in places steep and requires concentration so that you don't get a chance to see the views ...

We finally decided to only ride one way uphill and called SLR to come and pick us up ... Best $30 we spent! ... Having said that our son and his partner rode back and enjoyed it immensely ...

The point is ... Be honest about the ride! ... It is a Grade 2+ to 3 ... Definitely not a Grade 1! ...

It was lovely to see it being used by families and e bike and mountain bike riders alike and it was busy ...

Thanks again to SLR who we strongly recommend for services and great gear ...

This was our first time doing the Old Coach Rd bike trail, & in summary it wasn't easy, but it was worth it! We went as a family group, aged 9-60years & we all got to the end relatively unscathed! Although they estimate it takes 2-3hrs to complete & we took 3.5 :)
I would HIGHLY recommend TCB Ohakune for mountain bike hire - their team was friendly, well organised & knowledgeable. I would also recommend hiring a FULL suspension bike for this trail, as it is REALLY bumpy in areas where old cobble stones poke through the trail. It's worth the exta money & those of us who only hired the standard front suspension bikes did regret it. They also hire kids bikes & electric bikes & all bikes come with helmets. TCB can also organise a transfer shuttle to get you & your bike up to Horopito, so you only have to travel one-way - & it's the more downhill way ♡♡♡ But still 15kms.
All up a wonderful experience with gorgeous scenery.
We would also recommend LKNZ hostel as a clean, friendly place to stay in Ohakune, with a yummy cafe as well as self-catering kitchens & heaters in the rooms.
Oh & burgers at the Finch for dinner! Yummo!!!

The Old Coach Road trail was outstanding. Varied scenery, varied track, interesting information boards to read. Amazing railway architecture to experience. If you can ride a bike, you can do it, though you may have to get off and push at some of the steeper ups and downs.

I hired the bike and got transport to the start from TCB, who were excellent.

If you are uncertain whether to bike or walk, I suggest bike. There are some tedious bits for those on foot (especially at the Ohakapune end). I am a 65 year old woman who cycles regularly, but in the city, on hard surfaces. I've never mountain biked before. Most of the trail was well within my capability, and when it wasn't, I just got off and pushed (such as the bit where there was a narrow path, hairpin bends, and a cliff to one side).

An outstanding day out, that could take you a couple of tough hours or about 5 leisurely ones.
